Made $100,000 in capital gains this year? Before you hand over thousands to the CRA, here are 3 legal ways you could reduce your tax bill.”
1. Use Capital Losses
“Let’s say you made $100,000 selling a property or stocks, but you’ve also lost $30,000 on another investment.
You may be able to use that $30,000 loss to reduce your capital gain to $70,000.
And here’s what most people don’t realize: unused net capital losses can generally be carried forward indefinitely or carried back three years.”
2. Contribute to Your RRSP
“Capital gains can push you into a higher tax bracket.
But if you have RRSP contribution room, making a contribution could reduce your taxable income and potentially save you thousands in taxes.
Remember, an RRSP doesn’t eliminate the capital gain. It reduces your taxable income.”
3. Donate Appreciated Stocks
“Here’s one that many Canadians overlook.
If you own publicly traded stocks that have increased in value, consider donating those shares directly to a registered charity instead of selling them first.
When the donation qualifies, the capital gain on those donated shares can be completely tax-free, and you may also receive a charitable donation tax credit.”
Making money is important. But knowing how to keep more of it is just as important.
Before selling your next investment or property, speak to your accountant.
