I am starting to see a lot of requests on my personal social media feed from people looking for Financial Advisor recommendations. I can only imagine that this is the result of all the market turmoil out there.

It’s really important to be clear when you are posting a request of this type:

Are you looking for Investment Advice? or Financial Advisory related guidance.

Maybe both?

There is a difference.

You’ll see in the coming years, that licensing restrictions are getting stronger and stronger in order to protect the consumer.

There are a lot of people out here who are licensed to sell mutual funds, who are NOT qualified, Financial Advisors or qualified Financial Planners. There is a substantial difference.

Look for accreditation beside the Advisors name. The most common examples are:

CFP

Do a Google search on the names offered to you from your friends and community members.

Ask how the recommended advisor is compensated.

Ask them if the sell loaded funds. (DSC / LL / FE ) or if they offer embedded compensation.

This matters if you want to sell your investments.

Look for years of service. In todays market it is way more important than ever.

You need someone who is committed to your long term financial success.

There are many of us put there who are fantastic dedicated advisors. Some are independents. Some work for the competition.

There are more who could
Do way better.

This is your future. Ask questions and don’t apologize for it.
