Which organizations can issue official donation receipts?

Only Canadian registered charities and other qualified donees can issue official donation receipts that allow donors to claim a charitable tax credit (individuals) or deduction (corporations) on their tax return.

Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit

In July 2026, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) will replace the GST/HST credit. Under the new program name, payment amounts will be increased, but the eligibility, payment calculation, and structure will be the same as the GST/HST credit. Quarterly payment amounts will increase by 25% for 5 years (from 2026 to 2031) starting in July 2026.

As a part of the transition to the new CGEB, an additional one-time GST/HST credit top-up payment will be provided to individuals who were entitled to receive the GST/HST credit in January 2026. This immediate support will be issued starting June 5, 2026.

Who is eligible
In most cases, you will not need to apply for the CGEB. Only new residents of Canada may need to apply using Form RC151.

Don’t miss out on benefits and credits: Why filing your taxes matters

It pays to file your taxes every year!
Filing your taxes every year isn’t just about reporting your income — it’s the key to getting (and keeping) the benefits and credits that help you with everyday costs, including the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB). If you don’t file your taxes, you might be missing out on benefits and credits you’re entitled to receive.

Why it’s important to file your taxes on time
Your benefit and credit amounts for the year are calculated after your tax return is assessed. Starting in July each year, your benefit and credit amounts reset based on the tax return you filed for the previous year.

Making changes to your tax return? Here’s what’s new and how to save time

If you’ve filed your taxes but realized later that you forgot to claim a deduction, report income, or made an error, there’s no need to worry! You can request changes to your tax return without filing a new one. This process helps ensure your tax return is accurate and that you’re paying—or receiving—the correct amounts.

Since last tax season, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has introduced several improvements to make requesting changes to your tax return faster and easier.

CRA’s SR&ED Tax Incentive Program launches a new Pre-claim approval process

Is your business engaged in scientific research and experimental development (SR&ED)? The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers tax incentives to help you reduce the income tax you must pay and to support your innovation journey. As of April 1, 2026, eligible businesses can take advantage of the new Pre-claim approval process as they plan their research and development projects. The Canada Strong Budget 2025 introduced this initiative, which provides early certainty, streamlines the application process, and builds a direct relationship between claimants and the CRA.

What is the Pre-claim approval process?
The Pre-claim approval process is a new optional process that helps eligible small and medium businesses find out if their projects qualify for SR&ED tax incentives before they start work or incur any costs. By submitting a request, businesses can receive a determination from the CRA within eight weeks, making it easier to plan with confidence.

How your business can benefit
If you are eligible and choose to use the Pre-claim approval process, your business can benefit from:
1) early certainty by getting technical approval of planned SR&ED projects before you start work or incur costs
2) a streamlined application process by completing the application in less than a day using existing documentation
3) a direct relationship with the CRA by meeting with an SR&ED specialist who will get to know you and your work
