People are sometimes surprised by everything a financial advisor actually does.

Investments. Financial planning. Wills and estate planning. Tax preparation and planning. Loans and mortgages. Insurance.

None of those are complicated on their own. What's complicated is that most people end up handling each one separately, with different people who never talk to each other.

We think it makes more sense to have all of it under one roof, working together. That's what comprehensive financial planning looks like at Optimize Wealth Management here in Medicine Hat.

If you've only ever dealt with pieces of your financial life one at a time, send me a message and let's talk about what it looks like together.

🎯 Hot take: the more financial content you consume, the less clear you probably feel.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good book about money. A good podcast episode. That stuff has its place.

But 10 podcasts, 50 TikToks, 14 newsletters, and a dozen expert opinions later, you're still asking the same question: what actually matters for me?

More information isn't more clarity. It's just noise dressed up as help.

Especially now, with AI churning out money tips and tricks around the clock, the real skill isn't finding more advice. It's figuring out which sources actually fit your situation, and tuning the rest out.

Clarity beats noise. Every time.

This one’s stuck with me for a while 💭

Financial knowledge matters. But consistently acting on it is a completely different skill. You can know exactly what a TFSA is for, understand compound growth, and still make decisions in the moment that work against you. That gap between knowing and doing is where most financial plans actually succeed or fall apart, not in the spreadsheet, but in the follow-through.

Sometimes the best strategy is simply the one you can actually stick with.

Here's a distinction I explain a lot more than people expect.

Risk tolerance is emotional. It's how you feel watching your investments go up and down, whether that keeps you up at night or barely registers. Risk capacity is practical. It's what your actual financial situation, your timeline, your income, your obligations, can reasonably withstand.

The tricky part is these two don't always agree. Some people feel calm about big swings but don't actually have the financial cushion to absorb one. Others get nervous about every dip even though their situation could easily handle more risk. A real plan accounts for both, not just how you feel about risk, but what your circumstances can actually support.

Save this one, these two get confused constantly, and knowing the difference changes how you should actually be investing.

General information only, not personalized financial advice.

I'm so glad you're here, following along with everything I post about finance. I love this work, but for me it's never really been about the numbers. It's about helping people actually live their lives, with a little more clarity and a lot less stress. That's the whole reason I do this.

So here's a peek at the rest of it, the stuff that doesn't usually make it into a caption about RRSPs.

My parents, my four brothers and sister and their families, and my own wife and kids all live right here in Medicine Hat. We're a big crew. A lot of my time outside of work goes toward being present with the people in it.

Fun fact: my brothers and I were actually on Family Feud together. Massive highlight, and honestly, it says a lot about us, we're always up for getting involved in something fun together.

I give blood regularly, and I'm involved with Inclusion Alberta, an organization close to my heart. Outside of that, I'm into health and longevity, always have a podcast going, love a good movie, and music's pretty much a constant in the background of my day.

Because apparently I don't spend every waking moment thinking about financial plans.

Tell me something about you I wouldn't know from your Instagram feed either.

A lot of people think of us as "the investment guy." There's more here than that.

As a Certified Financial Planner in Medicine Hat, I work alongside Morgan and the team at Optimize Wealth Management to bring together investment management, financial planning, tax preparation, and insurance strategies, all in one connected plan instead of separate decisions made in isolation. That's what a complete financial picture actually looks like.

If you've only ever thought of us for one piece of your finances, RRSPs, TFSAs, or just your investment account, there's a lot more we can help with. Retirement planning. Insurance. Tax strategy. Mortgages. All under one roof, with one advisor who actually knows your full situation.

Ready to see what your whole financial picture could look like? Send me a message and let's book a time to talk it through.

Have you listened to this one yet? The Psychology of Money is one I keep coming back to.

Morgan Housel doesn't talk about stock picks or market timing. He talks about why we actually make the money decisions we make, the fear, the ego, the stories we tell ourselves about being rich or being safe. It's the kind of show that changes how you think about your own money, not just what you do with it.

If you've got a commute, a workout, or a drive out to Redcliff or Brooks coming up, this is the one to queue up. Take a listen and tell me what you think.
