Your bank offered you mortgage insurance when you signed. What they may not have mentioned: it’s not your only option, and it may not be your best one.

The biggest difference? Bank coverage shrinks as you pay down your mortgage, but your premiums stay the same. Personal coverage through an insurance company stays level, moves with you if you switch lenders, and protects your family, not just the bank.

👉 Quick question: did anyone actually explain this to you when you signed your mortgage? Tell me in the comments.

Let me start this by saying having ANY sort of inheritance is a privilege. Having money handed down is a huge reason why some people have a leg up and others don't, so having inheritance is by no means a plan, it's just winning the birth lottery.

That being said, even WITH having a huge lump sum of money handed to people, most people don't handle it correctly and end up blowing it. Whether this be a lottery or money being handed down, windfalls can be TOUGH to deal with.

There is a lot of psychological advice around handling large windfalls of money, but the most important of all is to NOT make any snap decisions with it. Assuming you don't have any ongoing financial emergencies, you should essentially pretend like you never received it. Buy yourself 1-2 nice things, maybe a trip or something else important to you, and invest the rest.

If you're like Lucas, this one decision could set you up VERY well. That windfall can go from being a few months of crazy spending to over a million dollars down the line. That's a safety net that can help break generational money issues.

Could this be used for other things like an education or a down payment on a house? Sure - and maybe that IS the right choice. This is simply a scenario where he has the flexibility and guidance to put it in the market and have patience.

This assumes 8% return (a rough inflation adjusted index fund return rate) over 42 years. Everyone will have different opinions on this, but I think 60 year old Lucas will appreciate $1.2m more than 18 year old Lucas will appreciate $50k.

- Matt

P.S. I get asked about my personal investments all the time, so I started uploading my portfolio to a free website where you can track my investments live. Comment "portfolio" and I'll send you the link to sign up!

Life doesn’t send warnings. 🚗💥💸
That’s why an emergency fund matters.

You don’t need to be rich — just prepared.
Start small. Stay ready. Protect your peace.
