Leaving Canada? Tax checklist 🇨🇦✈️

Before you go, keep these in mind:
• Residency is based on ties, not just days
• You may face a departure tax on investments (even if not sold)
• File a part-year return for the year you leave
• RRSPs can stay, but withdrawals are taxed
• TFSAs usually lose tax-free status after departure
• Canadian income may be subject to non-resident withholding tax
• Tax treaties can reduce double taxation

Planning ahead can save you thousands.
📌 Speak to a tax professional before you leave.

Registered plan check-in for 2026 ✅

New year = new contribution room — but it’s also when mistakes happen.

3 quick conversations to have now:
1. TFSA: 2026 limit = $7,000. Don’t rely only on CRA room (it may not be updated). Track deposits + withdrawals across all accounts.
⚠️ Overcontribution penalty = 1% per month on the excess.

2. RRSP: Contribution room = 18% of 2025 earned income, up to $33,810 (plus unused room).
⚠️ Overcontribution penalty generally applies if you go over by more than $2,000 = 1% per month on the excess.

3. FHSA: $8,000/year, $40,000 lifetime. Contributions are deductible and qualifying home withdrawals are tax-free.
📌 FHSA contributions must be made by Dec 31 (not the RRSP deadline).

A 15-minute review early in the year can save penalties and improve results.

A lot of people already know the DTC exists — but fewer know what the process actually looks like.

What to expect when applying:
1. A medical practitioner completes Form T2201
2. CRA reviews your eligibility based on how the impairment affects daily living
3. If approved, CRA confirms eligible years
4. You (or your caregiver) can claim the credit — and may be able to adjust previous returns

Key point: the DTC isn’t a cash benefit. It’s a tax credit that reduces tax owing — and that’s where the value comes from.

💡 TFSA Update for 2026 💡
The annual TFSA contribution limit for 2026 is $7,000.
📌 Don’t forget:
✅ It’s important to keep track of how much you contribute and withdraw from your TFSA, so you always know how much contribution room you have left.
✅ You have one total TFSA contribution limit, even if you hold multiple TFSAs across different banks or institutions — all contributions count toward the same limit.
📊 Accumulated TFSA Contribution Limit
Your total TFSA room is based on all annual limits since you turned 18 (or since 2009), minus contributions made, plus withdrawals from prior years.
💬 Not sure how much TFSA room you have available?
We can help you review your TFSA history and avoid over-contribution penalties.
