Wondering if it's time to incorporate your business?

Remaining a sole proprietor for too long can cost you. While sole proprietors are taxed at personal rates, a corporation pays much less tax on active business income.

The "sweet spot" for this transition typically occurs when your business reaches $75,000 to $125,000 in annual profits that you intend to reinvest.

We've now officially entered the summer season, with Canada Day just around the corner. At this time of year, many Ottawa families are spending weekends at the family cottage.

If you own a cottage and haven’t revisited your estate plan in the last three to five years, it’s worth a check-in. Property values across Ontario have shifted meaningfully. What made sense for your family a decade ago may not be the best path today.

In our latest blog post, our experts share what Ontario families should be thinking about when planning to hand off the family cottage to the next generation: https://hwpartners.ca/2026/06/17/passing-on-the-family-cottage-a-planning-guide/

A friendly tax reminder that if your business is incorporated and has a December 31 year-end, your corporate tax return is due to the CRA by the end of this month.

While balances owing were due on March 31, missing the June 30 filing deadline triggers immediate late-filing penalties on any unpaid amounts.

Whether you need to optimize your annual filings, navigate complex corporate reorganizations, maximize provincial and federal SR&ED tax credits, or manage international obligations, our corporate tax team guides you through the tax implications with precision and care.

The cottage is rarely just a piece of real estate. It’s where the kids learned to swim, where summer traditions live, where the family has gathered for decades.

But from the CRA’s perspective, it’s also a taxable asset. Without a plan, that tax bill can force difficult decisions at the moment your family is least prepared to make them.

At HW Partners, we help Ottawa families start this conversation while there’s still time to shape the outcome.

In this latest blog update, our experts share what every cottage owner in Ontario should know: https://hwpartners.ca/2026/06/17/passing-on-the-family-cottage-a-planning-guide/

It's important to be aware of the $30,000 threshold and how to proceed to avoid incurring penalties.

In this clip from our most recent webinar covering common and costly pitfalls for SMEs, Robin Lawrence explains when you might want to register for and begin charging HST.
