The busy season is over. Your books still think it's July.

Every fall we watch the same thing happen. An owner comes off a flat-out summer, the receipts are in a bag somewhere, the bank feed has not been touched since June, and the plan is to deal with it in the spring. Then April arrives and it is a week of work instead of an afternoon.

Five things worth doing this month:

Reconcile the bank. Every account, every month, up to August 31.

Chase the missing receipts while people still remember what they were for.

Pull the personal spending out. Every "I'll sort it later" charge is a question somebody has to ask you twice.

Check your HST position, so you know the number before the deadline instead of on it.

Then actually look at the year so far. There are four months left, which is enough time to change how it ends.

Save this and work through it one line at a time.

September is when the docks come out and this town goes back to being the locals.

The summer crowd thins, the seasonal staff head back to school, and the people who kept this place running all season get to breathe a little deeper. A lot of them are small business owners who just had the four months that pay for the other eight.

What we like most about doing this work here is that the numbers always belong to somebody real. The cafe you grab your coffee from. The contractor who got your roof done before the rain. The shop that stayed open through a slow spring because closing was not an option.

If that is you, the fall is the right time to get your head above water. And if it is not you, September is a good month to spend your money close to home.

Tag a business in the comments that deserves a busy fall too!

This is the happiest kind of goodbye…the temporary one.

Harley heads off on maternity leave at the end of this month, and we could not be more excited for her. She's been part of the bookkeeping side of things and a steady, kind presence in this office, the sort of person who quietly makes everyone else's day run smoother. We're going to miss her at the desk next to us, but we'll be right here when she's ready to come back. Wishing her rest, snuggles, and every good thing in this next chapter.

Send Harley some love in the comments, we'll make sure she sees it before she goes.

If the CRA has ever sent you an instalment reminder, mark September 15….it sneaks up every single year.

Not everyone pays tax by instalments, but if the CRA has sent you an instalment reminder (generally when your net tax owing tops $3,000), your next quarterly payment is due September 15. Miss it and interest can quietly start adding up.

The good news: it's easy to stay ahead of once you know it's coming. This is general information, check your own CRA instalment reminder for your exact amounts, or ask us if you're not sure whether it applies to you.

Not sure if instalments apply to you? Message us or book a consult through the link in our bio — let's check before September.

You've probably had your questions answered by her without ever knowing her name.

We'd like you to meet Kelsey, our Senior Bookkeeper, and a big part of why the work here runs the way it does. When your records are clean and current, everything downstream gets easier: your HST is right, your year-end isn't a scramble, and we can actually spend our time together on planning instead of untangling. That's Kelsey's work. Kelsey has been with us since 2023. She isn't originally from the area, she moved up a few years ago and chose this community, which tells you something about the kind of person she is.

Behind every set of books that finally makes sense, there's a bookkeeper who cared enough to get the details right. We're glad she's here.

Say hi to Kelsey in the comments, and if your books need the same attention, book a consult through the link in our bio.

If you've ever wondered whether you need a bookkeeper, an accountant, or both - here's the plain-English version.

'Do I need a bookkeeper or an accountant?' is one of the most common questions we get - and the honest answer is that they do different jobs. A bookkeeper keeps your day-to-day records clean and current. A CPA handles tax, year-end, compilations and the planning that goes with them. Plenty of small businesses are best served by a bit of both - clean books all year AND someone steering the tax side. The good news: you don't have to sort out the right mix on your own. That's exactly what a first conversation is for.

Save this for when you're ready to get organized, then DM us your question or book a consult through the link in our bio.

Today is Ashley's last day with us - and she's leaving for the best possible reason.

If you've ever called this office, Ashley is probably the first voice you heard. She's been the one keeping the day running - the door, the phones, the hundred small things you notice when they stop happening. She's heading back to school this fall, which is exactly the kind of brave we're happy to lose someone to. Small offices feel these things. You get used to someone's handwriting on a file, and the way they remember which client takes their coffee black. Thank you for everything, Ashley - go be great.

If Ashley ever made your day easier, leave her a note in the comments - we'll make sure she sees it.

We opened an email a couple of weeks ago and had to read it twice.

Danielle Smith Professional Accounting has been nominated by our community for the Parry Sound Area Chamber of Commerce 2026 Business Excellence Awards - in seven categories:

- Business of the Year
- Business Growth
- Professional Services Excellence
- Entrepreneur of the Year
- People's Choice
- Chamber Champion
- Outstanding Customer Experience

We're a small office in Seguin. We don't do this work for awards - we do it so the people around here feel a little less alone with their numbers. So to whoever put our name forward: thank you. That part means more than the rest of it.

Public voting is open from August 10 to 24. If we've ever made your numbers a little less stressful, we'd be so grateful for your vote - https://excellenceawards-vote.base44.app/

Voting closes August 24

This is probably the most expensive belief I see and it sounds so reasonable.

By the time tax season rolls around, the year is already over, and every decision that could have saved you money has already been made. The clients who get the most out of working with us are the ones who check in mid-year when there's still time to actually do something: adjust instalments, plan a big purchase, sort out HST, get ahead of year-end.

A 30-minute mid-summer check-in is often worth far more than the appointment itself.

If it's been a while, this is your sign — book a mid-year check-in through the link in our bio.
