The decision in Canada v. Marine Atlantic is significant because it confirms that courts may order substantial enhanced costs where one party, such as but not necessarily, the CRA, unnecessarily increases the expense and length of litigation through improper conduct.

In criticizing CRA's conduct, the court suggested that parts of the dispute and resulting costs could have been avoided, implying that CRA continued to pursue arguments that ultimately did not succeed. The significance of the case is not only that the taxpayer won, but that the court was critical of how CRA handled the litigation along the way.

UXBRIDGE, ON, April 9, 2026 – Finance minister Peter Bethlenfalvy, MPP for Pickering-Uxbridge, brought Associate Minister of Small Business Nina Tangri to town last week so that they could announce a tax break for small businesses.

Gathered at Low's Furniture store on Brock St. W. with Mayor Dave Barton, regional councillor Bruce Garrod and Dan Kelly, president and CEO of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, Tangri said that across the province, small businesses make up about 98 per cent of all employer businesses and are responsible for 3.5 million jobs in the province.

She said the provincial government is helping small businesses by cutting red tape and lowering costs. In addition, Tangri said, the government is proposing to cut the small business corporate income tax rate from 3.2 per cent to 2.2 per cent as of July 1 this year.

"This cut will reduce the corporate income tax rate by 31.25 per cent," she said, "allowing 375,000 small businesses to benefit from $1.1 billion in additional tax relief."

She said the new tax cut will enable "qualifying small businesses" to realize up to $5,000 in savings each year. (Tangri did not elaborate on how a small business qualifies for the cut.) On top of that, the minister stated, the province intends to allow businesses to accelerate write-offs on a broad range of capital investments that would provide over $3.5 billion in income tax relief over four years.

As of 2026, Ontario homeowners can access window replacement rebates through the new Home Renovation Savings (HRS) program, offering $100 per rough opening for qualified energy-efficient windows. This initiative, which replaced earlier federal grants, often requires a minimum of 3 windows, with additional savings available when bundled with insulation or air sealing upgrades.

Key 2026 Window Rebate Details in Ontario:
Program: Home Renovation Savings Program (launched Jan 2025).
Rebate Amount: Generally $100 per window opening.
Requirements: Minimum of 3 window replacements required, and new windows must meet specific energy efficiency standards.
Application Process: Available through the Home Renovation Savings website.
Eligibility: Must be an Ontario resident with an eligible home (detached, semi-detached, row house, etc.).
Bundling Options: Combining with air sealing can provide up to $250 extra, and insulation upgrades can offer up to $7,700.

For low-to-median-income households, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program may provide more substantial support, potentially covering full costs for eligible retrofits. It is highly recommended to check the official Home Renovation Savings portal for the most current requirements before starting, as programs and eligibility can change
