Want to know a bit more about the woman behind the tax business?

My name is Christine. I have been married to my wonderful husband Carlos for 18 years and we have 2 teenagers. If you come to drop off your taxes to me in person, then you might get the opportunity to meet our furry family members - we have 2 cats and have recently added a puppy to our family.

In my (little, but precious) spare time, I love to work out on my peloton bike and knit (but I haven’t quite mastered being able to do those 2 activities at the same time!). My fav movie can’t be narrowed down to just one as it is a trilogy: The Lord of the Rings.

You might have noticed that I have ‘P.Eng.’ behind my name. That is because I am a Professional Engineer. I worked in the engineering industry for 12 years and when I had young kids, I decided to make a change to be able to be my own boss and make my own schedule. I have always been a total math and finance nerd, so the switch to income tax was a natural one. Although the work is very different, the skills I gained in my career as an engineer translate nicely to my business: being meticulous, detail oriented, and good at problem solving.

In 2014, I completed the Small Business Accounting Certificate through Fleming College and launched Accountability Financial shortly thereafter. My business has grown immensely since then, thanks to my 5-star reputation and referrals from my amazing clients.

My fees for the upcoming tax season are:
- $75 + HST for Individuals
- $140 + HST for Couples
- $65 + HST for Seniors and Students
- $125 & up + HST for sole proprietor businesses
- Additional charge of $60 + HST for rental property reporting (per property)

Interested in having your tax return completed by me? Here is an outline of the steps:

Step 1 - reach out to me to receive a copy of my tax checklists that will assist you in gathering the required information.

Step 2 - send me your tax info. This can either by digitally through my secure link or hard copy (I am in the north end of Peterborough).

Step 3 - I will prepare your tax return within 1 week of receiving your information and reach out to you with any questions.

Step 4 - When your return is ready for filing, I will send you my invoice to pay and you will need to sign a form to allow me to efile your tax return.

Step 5 - Pay my invoice (cash,cheque, or e-transfer), sign the form (digitally or hard copy), and your tax return will be efiled with CRA right away.

Today is a big day: celebrating 10 years in business! My heart is filled with gratitude.

10 years ago today, I took a huge leap and launched my business. I was filled with all the feels: excited, nervous, proud, terrified. I left a successful career in engineering to become self-employed; a decision that I felt was best for me and my family. Would it be a success? Only time would tell.

As I reflect on the last 10 years, I have accomplished a lot!
- participated in the Starter Company Plus program where I formulated a business plan and pitched my business in front of a panel of judges. Only a few were selected to be awarded a grant and I was one of them!
- joined Women's Business Network of Peterborough to network and get to know other women in business. It is a great organization, so I decided to join the board! I was Treasurer for 3 years, then President, and then Past President. Although my time on the board is done, I am still a proud member.
- won Businesswoman of the Year in 2021. This was a huge accomplishment and I am so grateful for the Chamber of selecting me as the recipient of this high honour!
- exceeded all my sales targets; I quickly realized there is a huge need for quality bookkeeping and income tax preparation services. It didn’t take long before I had to hire staff to help keep up with demand.

My business has grown purely by word of mouth and referrals. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of my clients for spreading the word.

Where will the next 10 years take me? I’m excited to find out.

CRA is rolling out some cool new features this fall as part of their 100 day improvement plan. This is welcome news for all of us frustrated with wait times and/or the inability to get through at all!

This issue is still ongoing. I truly hope they rectify this soon as so many of my clients rely on this info to ensure they don’t over contribute!
