There’s no shortage of opinions about what you should be doing with your money.

Save more. Invest differently. Buy a house. Don’t buy a house. Use this strategy. Avoid that one.

Some of that advice may be well-intentioned. Some of it may even be good advice.

But good advice for someone else isn’t automatically good advice for you.

The same goes for choosing a financial advisor. Their role shouldn’t be to hand you someone else’s version of financial success. It should be to understand what matters to you and help you make informed decisions that move your life forward.

Listen to the advice. Ask questions. Then make the choice that fits you.

How does your financial professional get paid? If you’re not sure, it’s worth asking.

Commission, fees, salary—or a combination—the payment structure can influence the advice and services you receive. A good advisor should be able to explain their compensation clearly, without the financial jargon.

Understanding how they’re paid isn’t awkward. It’s transparency around making an informed decision about who you trust with your money.

One of the biggest misconceptions in personal finance is thinking one “financial advisor” can answer every money question.

In reality, different professionals specialize in different areas.

✔ Financial planning
✔ Investing
✔ Insurance
✔ Taxes
✔ Mortgages
✔ Legal planning

The trick isn’t finding *someone*.

It’s finding the *right* someone.

Save this post for the next time life throws you a money decision.

Not everyone who talks about money does the same job. Before you take financial advice,
understand:

who you are talking to

how they are paid

what they are qualified to do

and

whose interests they are serving.

This month we will be explaining the differences of valuable professionals to help you know who to ask which is just as important as knowing what to ask!

Many families have turned to GoFundMe during some of the hardest moments of their lives. When medical bills, lost income, and everyday expenses pile up, asking for help can be the only path forward—and there’s no judgment in that.

This conversation isn’t about criticizing those who needed support. It’s about helping more people avoid being in that position if they have the opportunity to plan ahead.

In Canada, our healthcare system covers many medical costs, but it doesn’t replace your income if you’re unable to work. That’s where disability insurance and critical illness insurance can make a meaningful difference.

The goal isn’t to buy a policy because of fear. It’s to understand what would happen financially if your paycheque stopped.

If you’re not sure what your income protection gap looks like, send me a message. In about 15 minutes, we can map it out together so you can make informed decisions—no pressure, just clarity.

The biggest shift happens when you stop trying to control everything—and start focusing on what you actually can.

You can’t control every diagnosis, every market swing, or every unexpected expense. But you can influence your habits, your mindset, your preparation, and the choices you make every day.

Your health and your finances have more in common than you might think. Small, consistent decisions today can create stronger outcomes tomorrow. Accept what you can’t change. Take ownership of what you can. That’s where real progress begins.

What is one thing you can control today that your future self will thank you for?

Happy Canada Day!

Today is a reminder that we’re lucky to call a country like this home—not because it’s perfect, but because it’s full of opportunity, resilience, and people looking out for one another.

Whether you’re spending the day at the cottage, around the BBQ, or watching fireworks, I hope you get a chance to slow down and enjoy it.

And if this year has you thinking a little more about your future than your next long weekend, that’s okay too. Building a financial plan is really about creating more freedom to enjoy moments like these.

Have a safe and happy Canada Day! 🍁

We’re conditioned to think that being good with money means constantly making changes.

Buying. Selling. Optimizing. Chasing the next “best” investment or trying to keep up with other people’s lifestyle.

But sometimes, the smartest financial decision is to do... nothing.

If your financial plan is solid and your goals haven’t changed, reacting to every headline or market swing can do more harm than good.

Doing nothing doesn’t mean being lazy. It means trusting the plan you built.

Of course, there are times when action is the right move—major life changes, a shift in goals, or if you don’t actually have a plan to begin with.

The challenge is knowing the difference.

Have you ever regretted making a financial decision too quickly? Let me know in the comments. 👇

Today, we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, mentors, coaches, and father figures who help shape our lives.

The ones who lead by example, offer steady support, teach life’s lessons, and show up when it matters most.

Thank you for the sacrifices you’ve made, the values you’ve instilled, and the impact you continue to have on the generations that follow.

Wishing a very Happy Father’s Day to all fathers and father figures. We hope you feel appreciated today and every day.
