Did you know that CRA review support is included in your tax preparation fee?

At SureTax, we stand behind the returns we prepare. If CRA selects your return for review, we'll help you understand what's being requested, gather the necessary documents, and submit the response on your behalf.

CRA reviews are normal and do not nessesarily mean that anything is wrong. However they can be very stressful. That's why we're here to help every step of the way.

When a review happens, we are ready to back up our work and help our clients navigate the process with confidence.

Tax tip for seniors:
Lower Your Taxes with Pension Splitting!

Transfer up to 50% of your pension to a lower-income spouse and both of you can stay in lower tax brackets—paying less tax overall!
No actual money changes hands; it’s just a calculation to reduce your taxes.

Example: John earns $40K in pension → splits $20K with Mary → both report $20K → lower combined taxes!

Important 2026 Tax Deadlines for Canadian Filers

📢 Tax season is here! The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced the key deadlines for filing 2025 tax returns (in 2026):

🗓️ February 23, 2026 – CRA opens its online filing system; this is the earliest day you can file your 2025 tax and benefit return online.

🗓️ March 2, 2026 – Deadline to contribute to your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) for the 2025 tax year.

🗓️ April 30, 2026 – Deadline to file your 2025 personal income tax return (for most individuals). This date is also the payment due date for any taxes owing for 2025 to avoid interest and penalties.

🗓️ June 15, 2026 – Extended filing deadline for self-employed individuals (and their spouse/common-law partner) to file 2025 returns. (Note: any taxes owing are still due by April 30, 2026 to avoid interest charges.)

Need help with your taxes? Our team is here to ensure you have a stress-free tax season.

Red Lake & Ear Falls Residents!

Did you know you may be able to claim travel expenses 🏖🏕✈️ for personal trips on your taxes? You can claim up to two leisure trips per person in your household. Sounds too good to be true...

The travel part of the Northern Residents Deduction can reduce your taxable income if you qualify. Claiming it can be tricky, but that's where we help.

At SureTax, we offer this deduction to all clients who may benefit from it, making sure you don’t miss out on potential savings.

A little extra care comes with every tax return we file. When we prepare your taxes, we don’t just focus on current year. We also take a quick look at your past returns to see if anything may have been missed.

Things we often catch are missed RRSP contributions, unclaimed tuition amounts, Northern Residents Deduction and some other credits people didn’t know they qualified for.

Recently we helped our client get back over $15,000 in refunds after finding RRSP contributions they missed over the past 10 years. We refiled the returns—and the refunds followed!

If you’ve ever wondered whether your past returns were done right, we’re happy to take a look.

A little win worth sharing!

Recently, a new client came to us completely stressed out. CRA told them they owed $55,000 in taxes — and to make things worse, they froze their bank account. 😬

Once we got access to their CRA profile, it didn’t take long to notice something strange… CRA had arbitrarily assessed their taxes and “forgot” to include any of the client’s deductions. Naturally, that made the numbers look a lot scarier than they should have been.

So, we rolled up our sleeves, dug into the details, and re-filed several years of returns properly — with all the right deductions.

The result? Not only did they not owe $55,000… they’re actually getting refunds!

It was such a relief for them — and a great reminder for everyone else:
👉 Don’t assume the CRA is always right.
👉 If something doesn’t feel accurate, talk to a tax professional.

We’re always here to help you make sense of your taxes and get the outcome you actually deserve. 💙

First Home Savings Account is great! I can't recommend it enough. Tax free money for the down-payment: gives you bigger tax refund and the growth within it isn't taxed either. Excellent saving tool if you are looking to buy your first house.

🏡 Thinking of Renting Out Your Home? Read This!

If you're turning your home into a rental or moving back into a rental property, you might need to file an election with CRA to avoid a surprise tax bill!

Here’s what you should know:

✅Election 45(2):
When you turn your home into a rental, this election lets you delay paying capital gains tax. You may also keep claiming it as your principal residence for up to 4 more years!

✅ Election 45(3):
If you’re moving back into a former rental, this election can help you avoid paying capital gains tax right away, as long as you didn’t claim depreciation (CCA) during the rental years.

⚠️ Important: These elections must be filed on time!
If you're late, CRA charges \$100 per month, up to $8,000.

💡 Tip: Don’t claim CCA if you think you’ll move back in or want to use these elections later.

Not sure if this applies to you? Send us a message—we're happy to help!
