Tax planning can be especially important when disability-related expenses and government benefits are involved.

Depending on your circumstances, you may want to explore:
✔️ Disability Tax Credit
✔️ Medical expense claims
✔️ Disability supports
✔️ RDSP
✔️ Child Disability Benefit
✔️Canada Disability Benefit
✔️ Other related benefits and credits

📌 Tax tip: A disability-related tax credit is not always just about the tax credit itself. It may also affect eligibility for other programs.

Paper receipts stuffed into a shoebox?
Digital records everywhere?

Neither system works well if you cannot find what you need.

The best record-keeping system is one that is:
✔️ Organized
✔️ Consistent
✔️ Backed up
✔️ Easy to access
✔️ Retained for the required period

📌 Tax tip: Whether you use paper, digital records, or a combination of both, your records should support the income and expenses reported on your tax return. Remember a statement is not a receipt.

The TFSA is one of Canada's most flexible savings and investment tools.
Despite the name, it is not just a “savings account.”

Depending on the account, you may be able to hold:
✔️ Cash
✔️ GICs
✔️ Mutual funds
✔️ Stocks
✔️ ETFs

Investment growth and qualifying withdrawals are generally tax-free.

📌 Tax tip: Keep track of your contributions and withdrawals to avoid accidentally overcontributing.

A few things to know:
📄 Keep your T4
💰 Understand deductions from your pay cheque
🧾 Keep receipts for potentially eligible expenses
🏦 Consider whether an RRSP or TFSA makes sense for you

📅 Remember—you may still need to file a tax return even if you had little income.

📌 Tax tip: Filing your first tax return can help you access benefits and credits you may qualify for. Even without any income those with DTC approval should start filing at age 16 and at age 18 for everyone else.

A mileage log helps support the business-use portion of your vehicle expenses.
A good log should generally track:

📍 Date
📍 Destination
📍 Purpose of the trip
📍 Kilometres driven

You should also track your total annual kilometres.

📌 Tax tip: “I know I use my vehicle about 70% for business” is not the same as having records to support the calculation.

An RESP helps families save for a child’s future education.

Your contributions grow tax-deferred, and the government may add grant money through the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG).

That means every dollar saved today can go even further later.

Starting early allows more time for growth—but starting later can still be beneficial.

A new baby brings a lot of changes—including financial and tax changes.
New parents may want to review:

👶 Canada Child Benefit eligibility
👶 Child care expenses
👶 Medical expenses
👶 RESP savings
👶 Disability Tax Credit eligibility, if applicable
👶 Changes to employment income or leave benefits

📌 Tax tip: Keep your family information updated with the CRA when your circumstances change.

When starting a business many people don’t think about insurance until it’s too late.

Depending on the type of insurance and how it relates to your business, some premiums may be deductible.

Examples may include certain types of:
✔️ Business liability insurance
✔️ Professional liability insurance
✔️ Commercial property insurance

📌 Tax tip: Keep your insurance invoices and ask how the specific policy relates to your business activities before claiming the expense.

The First Home Savings Account can offer:
🏠 Tax-deductible contributions
🏠 Tax-free qualifying withdrawals
🏠 Tax-deferred growth

It combines some of the tax advantages of an RRSP and TFSA—but it has its own rules and eligibility requirements.

📌 Tax tip: If you qualify, understanding the contribution rules early can help you make the most of the account.
