Why a TFSA Still Makes Great Sense in 2025–2026
The Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) remains one of the most flexible and powerful savings tools for Canadians. With a TFSA, any money you earn — whether interest, dividends, or capital gains — grows completely tax-free, and you can withdraw funds at any time without paying tax or affecting federal benefits such as Old Age Security (OAS) or the Canada Child Benefit (CCB). Unused contribution room carries forward indefinitely, making the TFSA useful for both short-term goals and long-term financial planning.
For 2025 and 2026, the Canada Revenue Agency has set the annual TFSA contribution limit at $7,000. This limit is indexed to inflation and only increases when inflation pushes it to the next $500 increment. Any unused contribution room from prior years continues to accumulate, and withdrawals made in one year are added back as contribution room the following year. Many Canadians now have significant cumulative TFSA room, but it’s important to track contributions carefully, as over-contributions are subject to monthly penalties. Overall, the TFSA remains a cornerstone of tax-efficient saving thanks to its tax-free growth, flexibility, and long-term value.
