GST/HST Tax Break in Canada
GST/HST tax exempts starts today, Saturday December 14th and ends on February 15th.
Here is a list of Tax-Exempt Items in this period:
Food and Groceries:
- Prepared foods (e.g., sandwiches, salads, platters, pre-made meals)
- Snacks (chips, candy, baked goods, fruit-based snacks, granola bars)
- Certain energy bars (if considered food by Health Canada, not enhanced)
- Gift baskets (90%+ qualifying food/beverage content)
- Prepared meals and beverages (including delivery by food establishment)
- Third-party delivered meals (food exempt, delivery cost taxable)
Beverages:
- Non-alcoholic drinks (not from vending machines)
- Alcoholic beverages (≤22.9% alcohol)
- Spirit mixed coolers (≤7% alcohol)
- Certain energy/protein shakes (if not enhanced, considered food/beverage)
Restaurant Meals and Drinks:
- Meals from various food service establishments
- Qualifying mixed drinks in restaurants/bars
- Tips included in the bill
- Qualifying catering services
Children's Clothing and Accessories:
- Infant/children's clothes and accessories
- Footwear (insole ≤24.25 cm)
- Certain sports clothing
- Diapers and related items
- Qualifying children's car seats
Children's Toys and Video Games:
- Board/card games
- Building/creative toys
- Dolls, plush toys, and accessories
- Toys for children under 14
- Jigsaw puzzles
- Video game consoles and games (non-downloadable)
Books, Magazines, and Newspapers:
- Most published books (including audio books)
- Religious scriptures
- Qualifying magazines/periodicals (subscriptions)
- Qualifying newspapers
