๐จ Major CRA Changes for 2024 โ What You Need to Know! ๐จ
The Canada Revenue Agency has rolled out significant updates for 2024, impacting homeowners, businesses, volunteers, and taxpayers. Here are some key changes:
๐ Short-Term Rentals: Expenses for non-compliant rentals are no longer deductible. Get compliant by Dec 31, 2024, to retain deductions!
๐ Digital Platform Reporting: Platforms like Airbnb & Uber must report seller income to CRA by Jan 31, 2025.
๐ Home Buyersโ Plan: The withdrawal limit increases to $60,000 (from $35,000) after April 16, 2024. Repayment relief extended by three years for withdrawals between 2022-2025.
๐ Capital Gains Inclusion Rate: For gains above $250,000, the inclusion rate rises from 50% to 66.67% starting Jan 1, 2026.
๐ Volunteer Firefighter & S&R Tax Credit: Doubled to $6,000, with a max tax relief of $900 for 2024 onward.
๐ Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT): Rate increased from 15% to 20.5%, and the exemption threshold jumps to $173,205.
๐ COVID-19 Benefit Repayments: If you repaid COVID-19 benefits in 2024, you can deduct the repayment on your 2024 tax return.
๐ Underused Housing Tax (UHT): If you are neither a citizen nor a permanent resident, you may have new tax filing obligations.
๐ Charitable Donations Deadline Extended: Contributions made until Feb 28, 2025, can be claimed for the 2024 tax year.
