I'm back to posting after a hiatus! I could say it was intentional but it really wasn't - I underestimated the volume I had put into my schedule. Here's what I've been up to since my last post in December:

- performed in an improv comedy show for the first time after taking a class
- tried out meeting surges for the first time ever
- passed the last pre-req exam for the CIM designation, & applied for it
- taught a session on financial literacy at the Squamish public library
- started a budgeting coach training program
- went whitewater kayaking, mountain biking & skiing
- turned 30

Writing that all out, it's been a stellar 1.5 months. I should mention I was previously afraid of public speaking, but I'm grateful to the improv class for ripping off that bandaid.

Looking forward to the rest of 2023. 😅

Do you think you own company stock as part of your compensation package?

Take a look at your compensation agreement again. I chatted to someone who was under the impression they owned 20,000 shares of company stock. They were thinking of leaving the company, so they wanted information on how to sell them.

They comp agreement showed that they only had the option to buy the stock at $1 per share. We tried to find info from the company on their board-approved share price to see if this was a good deal, but they wouldn't give any information about price, and they said they don't organize an internal market to buy & sell shares.

I think it's safe to assume they're worthless. I can only imagine how devastating it feels to have that sort of thing ripped out from under your feet.

If you need help deciphering your compensation agreement, book a time with me to here:

Meet Kathryn 👩

Investor profile: catastrophizer

Kathryn is a late starter to saving, but makes she's making good money. Still, she's worried that she'll end up homeless on the street because she won't have enough saved for retirement.

Dear Kathryn: it's not too late, and you're going to be okay.

I had an interesting conversation with a millennial woman.

She said she is the child of wealthy parents, but that they they won’t tell her the method to becoming wealthy. They brush her off when they talk to her. I wonder why that happens?

If you're raising kids as the primary caregiver, don't let your partner work mainly under the table. Why? If you separate, and if they haven't claimed income on their tax return, you won't be entitled to CPP credits from them. That means less retirement money for you.

Meet Jude 🤸

Investor profile: idealist

Jude 100% believes that his stock picks will succeed. Jude's portfolio is down 80%, but he's still optimistic.

Dear Jude: optimism is great but it can also blind you to a bad investment.

A senior client called me, wanting to help their daughter with their house purchase. They were thinking about taking out approximately 15% of their portfolio. Before making the withdrawal though, they wanted to know how much money they’d lost in the recent market downturn.

Well, I said, despite funding your lifestyle each month, your portfolio value is actually about the same as it was 2 years ago.

This client was surprised. They’d been listening to the news and had figured they were facing heavy losses.

But this client was invested in conservative, low volatility investments that were very well diversified and have downside risk management and they’d been invested for a long time without changing their strategy.

This senior was relieved, I can tell you.

On the other hand, this same senior could have easily felt they were getting low returns over the past several years by being invested conservatively. They may have felt the FOMO.

All this to say that the benefit of goals & values-based investing, using professional advice, and a willingness to stick to the plan is peace of mind when the tide is going out.

Dear Millennial,

When you’re in a meeting with me, you don’t need to justify the financial help your parents give you. Life is expensive, and I’m happy you have a leg up. I support you.

Sincerely,
Hannah, your financial planner

Meet Franklin 🕺

Investor profile: overthinker

Franklin knows lots about the economics, politics & investing. He's a great saver but he's 45 and hasn't started investing yet - he's dealing with paralysis by analysis.

Dear Franklin: you did the hardest part by asking for help.

If you & your spouse have different incomes, if you're the one making less, & you split bills 50/50... it's even more important not to put inheritance money into your joint home. It should be kept in an account in your name only. Make sure it remains yours.

12/06/2022

Let's face your financial problems together, okay?

You really don't have to do it on your own. Some people thrive on this stuff and others just don't.

It's okay to ask for help.

Do you dream about not having to work?

Retiring requires trade-offs, no matter what age you retire.

Many people dream of retiring early, but many people also enjoy using a bigger portion of their income today.

Retiring well before 65 often means spending less than your peers and investing the difference.

And either choice is okay. 🤷
