PEI RCMP warn about cheque overpayment scam
PEI RCMP are warning businesses and individuals about a fraud scheme involving overpayment cheques and requests to return the difference.
PEI RCMP regularly receive reports of cheque overpayment scams. In these incidents, scammers approach businesses or individuals seeking goods, services, or employment opportunities. They provide payment by cheque, but the cheque is for more than the agreed amount. The scammer then asks the victim to send the overpayment back.
For example, a scammer may purchase $2,000 worth of goods or services and provide a cheque for $5,000. They then request that the victim wire the $3,000 difference back to them. The fraudster's goal is to have the victim send the money before the bad cheque bounces.
Recent reports have involved fraudsters posing as customers, employers hiring workers who are asked to cash cheques as part of their duties, and individuals making payments by cheque for items advertised through online classifieds.
How to protect yourself
• Treat any cheque overpayment as suspicious.
• Never wire money back to someone who has overpaid by cheque.
• Ensure a cheque has fully cleared before using those funds. Just because money appears in your account does not mean the cheque has cleared. Contact your financial institution for more information about cheque hold periods and verification processes.
• Be cautious of urgency. Scammers often pressure victims to act quickly before they have time to verify the transaction.
"Cheque overpayment scams have been around for a long time, but the stories scammers use are constantly changing," said Cpl. Gavin Moore, Media Relations Officer for the PEI RCMP. "Protect yourself, your family, and your friends by sharing this information. An informed public is a protected public."
