One Thing That Catches People Every Year

A lot of people assume if they have until June to file, they also have until June to pay.

They don’t.

Even for self-employed:
👉 Any balance owing is due April 30.

That’s where interest starts — and it adds up quickly.

It’s a small detail, but it’s one of the most common (and costly) misunderstandings I see every year.

Upcoming Tax Deadlines (Quick Reminder)

A couple key dates to keep on your radar:

• April 30, 2026 – Personal tax filing deadline (and payment deadline for everyone)
• June 15, 2026 – Filing deadline for self-employed individuals

Even if you have until June to file, any balance owing is still due April 30 — that’s the one that catches people off guard.

No rush for most people yet, but it’s a good time to start getting things together so it’s not a last-minute scramble.

Small Business Tip: Separate Your Accounts

One of the simplest things you can do to make bookkeeping and tax time easier is to separate your business and personal banking.

It sounds basic, but it saves a lot of headaches later.

Benefits:
• Cleaner bookkeeping
• Fewer missed deductions
• Faster year-end work
• Less chance of CRA questions

If you’re running a business through your personal account, it might be time to open a dedicated business account.

Your future self (and your accountant) will thank you.

Quick Business Tip: Know Your “Real” Monthly Fixed Costs

Most business owners know what they spent last month…
but not what they have to spend every month to keep the doors open.

Take 10 minutes and list your fixed costs:
• rent / lease
• software subscriptions
• insurance
• loan payments
• payroll base / contractors
• phone/internet
• accounting/legal

Once you know that number, pricing and cash flow decisions get a lot easier.

It’s one of the simplest exercises that gives you immediate clarity.

📊 What Your Financial Statements Actually Tell You

Most business owners look at revenue first.
But revenue doesn’t tell you much on its own.

What matters more:
• Are margins improving or shrinking?
• Are expenses growing faster than sales?
• Is cash flow keeping up with profit?

Your numbers aren’t just for tax filings — they’re a decision-making tool.

If you only look at your financials once a year, you’re missing opportunities in the other eleven months.

📣 Back in the swing of things after a bit of a break.

With tax season around the corner, here’s a quick heads-up on some of the key CRA deadlines for the 2025 tax year that are worth having on your radar:

• February 23, 2026 – NETFILE opens
• March 2, 2026 – RRSP contribution deadline (for 2025 deductions)
• April 30, 2026 – Filing deadline for most individuals
• April 30, 2026 – Payment deadline for everyone (including self-employed)
• June 15, 2026 – Filing deadline for self-employed individuals
• Corporations (T2) – File within 6 months of fiscal year-end

No action needed for everyone today — just a reminder so nothing sneaks up later.

More updates coming as we move through tax season.

🎄 December Reminder

December is a busy month for everyone — personally and professionally.

But it’s also a good time to take a breath and look at your business from a higher level:

• What worked well this year?
• What absolutely didn’t?
• What do you want to change heading into January?

You don’t need spreadsheets or reports for this one!

The numbers come later. The direction starts now.

📹 QuickBooks Tips & Tricks

I put together a short QuickBooks Online walkthrough and used a bit of AI to help format it into a video. I’ve been doing a lot more QBO cleanup and setups lately, so I figured I’d share a few simple tips that make bookkeeping a lot smoother.

If you’re using QBO and ever have questions, want a bit of training, or just want to make sure things are set up properly, feel free to reach out — always happy to help.

Have any tips or easier ways to keep your books clean? Let me know — I’m always open to new shortcuts.
