We’re two days until the April 30th tax filing deadline, and Chantelle from Edward Jones - Financial Advisor: Chantelle G. Meriam dropped in at the end of day yesterday with her annual Tax Season Survivors basket. We’re super appreciative of the sweet treats and fun office supplies as we race across the finish line.

Thank you, Chantelle! I’m thankful for the wisdom you share with me and Matthew, as well as with our mutual clients. I’m so glad that I have you in my life!

Happy New Year! I hope that the holiday season was a good one for all of you.

January is (the month that never ends, and) my quietest month, work-wise. Both CRA and my CRA-certified tax software are getting updated and ready for the upcoming personal tax season, and my corporate clients are reconciling their year-ends to get them ready to send my way.

My husband and I take this opportunity to vacation in our beloved Mexico, to reflect upon the prior year and to rest up for the busy year ahead.

I will be in the office this week (January 5th - 8th) and will reopen January 26th after I return from holidays. I will be checking emails when I can, so send any questions my way and I’ll return them the next time I have the opportunity to log into the office.

I look forward to seeing all of your faces once tax season starts ramping up in February!

I wrote the UFE (Uniform Final Exam) over a four-day period in 2000 and passed on my first attempt. I was a Chartered Accountant!

Different Canadian accounting bodies merged ten years ago under the CPA umbrella, and I now sign my work emails with a CPA, CA designation after my name. I have great pride in my profession and all that it represents.

This week I received this card of congratulations along with a 25-year Member pin. I still remember the day the partner I articled for received his 25-year pin like it was yesterday, and yet somehow now it’s my turn. What an honour!

The wonderful Chantelle from Edward Jones - Financial Advisor: Chantelle G. Meriam stopped by yesterday with her annual basket of goodies for us. So many thoughtful treats! Thank you, Chantelle!

It’s been a particularly difficult tax season due to CRA’s ongoing technical difficulties, but having Ashtyn and Elle at the front and helping with admin kept me sane. Throw in having the best clients on the planet, and I’m still smiling on this April 30th. Thank you to everyone who joined us on this tax season adventure, and see you next year!

Such a good cause, and if you keep your eyes peeled during Light Up on the Friday night before, you can also drop cash donations to the Summerland Food Bank in boots held by members of the Summerland Fire Department.

If you go to Second Home Café & Grill for the Toonies for Tots and Teens Breakfast, you will be served by my husband Matt and his fellow members of the Summerland Fire Department.

It’s a great opportunity to support our community members in need, while enjoying a delightful breakfast!

A very big thank you to those who nominated me for the Best of Penticton in the Accountant category! I just got an email telling me that I have advanced to the Voting Round, and than now is a good time to let people know that they can vote, should they want to.

It really is an honour to be nominated. I love what I do, and the people I work with.

Thank you again!

It’s a dreary day, and I’m running on fumes (and caffeine), so what a treat to have Chantelle from Edward Jones - Financial Advisor: Chantelle G. Meriam drop off her office’s annual Tax Season Survivor kit!

Many thanks, Chantelle and Robyn! Ashtyn and I are going to dive right in. 😊

(Regular filing deadline is in 25 days, folks. See you soon if we haven’t already!)

Now that we're starting a new year, we all know what's just around the corner: Tax Season!

Whether you're someone who likes to plan ahead, or someone who needs a deadline to get started (or both!), we've got you covered. A few deadlines to keep in mind this January before things ramp up in February, factoring in the fact that 2024 is a leap year:

T4/T5 deadline for employers: February 29th.

If you need to issue T4s to your employees or T5s to the shareholders of your company, the last day to file them without penalties and interest is February 29th. Ideally, we like to start on these early in February, so once you have the bulk of your information together, we can get started on them. Contact us when you're ready.

RRSP contribution deadline: February 29th.

The deadline is 60 days after December 31, which for the majority of years is March 1st, but 2024 is a leap year. The deadline for contributing to your RRSP this year is February 29th. If you're nervous about your tax bill due to additional income or other reasons, I can do a draft of your taxes for you mid-February to help you decide on any RRSP contributions you may want to make. Just give me a call to set up a time to do so.

Personal tax filing deadlines: April 30th/June 15th.

The personal tax filing deadline is April 30th, but if you're self-employed and report business or professional income on the T2125, you have until June 15th to file without any late-filing penalties. This kicker is, if you owe taxes, CRA starts charging interest on the taxes owing as of May 1st. We prefer to save you paying any more than you need to, but if you just can't get your business information ready for an April 30th filing, we'll help you get it filed before June 15th.

Incorporated companies: 6 months after your year-end.

While you have 6 months to file your corporate tax return without any late-filing penalties, a similar pesky rule comes into play with CRA charging interest on any taxes owing three months after your year-end. So, if you have a December 31 year-end and have taxes owing, interest on that amount owing starts accruing on April 1st. Again, we like to save you paying any interest and penalties, so if we have your information in a timely manner, we like to get you filed within that three-month period. If life gets in the way, as it does, we'll get it filed as soon as we can once you get your information to us.

If you have any questions or want to set up a time to talk taxes, you can call our offices at 778-516-7707 or email me at [email protected].

See you soon!

Another year, another tax season done! My brain is going to turn its focus back to corporate financials and tax returns, but a portion of it is always open for business for my self-employed clients (June 15th deadline!) and my other clients for whom April 30th is just a suggestion.

I could not have made it through this season without Ashtyn by my side. Her administrative and Excel skills are to be envied. We’re such a well-oiled machine that I had time this weekend to (nap, and) hike up Cartwright with my husband Matt and our dog Maisy.

Thank you to each and every one of our clients who are, hands down, the best clients on the planet. Thank you for trusting us and for sharing your struggles and for making us laugh in the midst of the long days.

I sure do love what I do. And should you ever need my assistance with anything accounting or tax related, I’m always happy to help.

It’s that time of year!

Edward Jones - Financial Advisor: Chantelle G. Meriam dropped off my Tax Season Survivor gift basket. Chantelle Meriam is the Queen of gift baskets — I cannot wait to crack it open.

(Friendly reminder — April 30th is only 25 days away!)
