If you have a safe deposit box at your local bank or credit union, you probably have it to safely store important documents, valuables, and other items that you want to ensure are protected from fire and theft. While having a safe and secure way to store documents, with the changes in technology and digitization of documents remains unchanged, the purpose of a safe deposit box may not be what it once was. Instead of papers, your SDB may now also store portable hard drives and passwords to let you in to important websites. Whatever is in your SDB, what hasn't changes is the importance of making sure your executor and family know that you have a safe deposit box, and where it is. MoneySense has released a great article on why having a safe deposit box or other secure way to store your documents is still important, and offers some simple steps to make sure your family knows what to do to access it when the time comes.

A safety-deposit box can protect important documents and valuables, but your family may struggle to access them if they don't know it exists or how to get in.
