🔍 Feeling overwhelmed by tax complexity? You're not alone! If you've relied on TurboTax but find your finances are getting complicated, it might be time to explore other options.

💼 Complex Situations: Life changes like marriage, homeownership, or side businesses can make tax filing daunting, especially if TurboTax was your go-to for simpler returns.

💰 TurboTax Cost Concerns: It's no secret that TurboTax prices have been increasing rapidly the past few years. Why pay so much and still have to prepare your own tax return?

😰 Lost Confidence in DIY: Juggling multiple financial streams can erode your confidence in self-filing, leaving you unsure if you're covering everything properly.

📝 Constant Tax Code Changes: The Canadian tax code evolves frequently, making it challenging to keep up without professional insight. You have anxiety about missing some updates, potentially costing you benefits.

🐴 Horses for Courses: While TurboTax suits very simple returns, complex finances call for expert assistance.

🇨🇦 Looking to file your taxes in Canada with DIY software? Let's compare two popular choices: TurboTax and Wealthsimple Tax.

🔵 TurboTax: Well-known and versatile, offering Free, Standard, Premier, and Self-Employed versions. It can handle various tax returns but be cautious about potential upsells.

🟢 Wealthsimple Tax (formerly SimpleTax): Known for its ease of use and "pay what you want" pricing model. However, recent acquisition by Wealthsimple raises questions about future pricing and data privacy.

🤔 How to choose? For simple returns, both work, but TurboTax offers more features. If supporting a Canadian company and flexible pricing matter, consider SimpleTax.

Looking back at the start of 2023, did you notice a slight change in your Employment Insurance (EI) premiums? On January 1st, the Maximum Insurable Earnings (MIE) went up from $60,300 to $61,500. What does this mean for us? Simply put, EI premiums were paid on earnings up to $61,500 this year, a bit more than in 2022.

Here's the breakdown: The employee EI premium rate for 2023 was set at $1.63 for every $100 earned. So, if you were making up to or over $61,500, the maximum EI premium you'd pay for the year hit $1,002.45. That's a slight jump from the $952.74 cap in 2022.

And here's a bit of good news: With the increased MIE, the maximum weekly EI benefit rate also rose – from $638 to $650 per week. However, if you had a claim established before December 31, 2022, this change didn't affect you.

In layman's terms, for every $100 you earned, $1.63 was deducted for EI, up to the annual salary cap of $61,500. Earning $65,000 a year? Your EI premiums were calculated only on the first $61,500 of your income.

Understanding your Ontario paycheck deductions is crucial for financial planning. In Canada, while federal tax rates are consistent, provincial rates vary. Your pay stub reflects deductions for federal and provincial taxes, CPP, EI, and any RRSP contributions. RRSPs reduce taxable income, offering immediate tax savings and company matching benefits. CPP, mandatory for working Canadians, and EI, supporting temporarily unemployed individuals, are deducted based on specific percentages of your income. Federal and provincial taxes in Ontario are bracket-based, ensuring a fair distribution of tax loads. Calculating net income involves subtracting these taxes and contributions from your gross income.
