After decades of saving every month, you'd think spending in retirement would be the easy part. It isn't.

That habit gets so ingrained that switching it off becomes one of the hardest things people face.

I watch it create real strain, even in good marriages, when one partner starts quietly judging what the other spends.

The cash flow system I use takes that tension off the table by giving every dollar a clear job.

Did you find the switch from saving to spending harder than you expected?

A lot of people tell me they don't have enough to retire. Often, they're wrong.

The reason is simple: they're only counting the money, and money is just one piece.

I think in terms of resources, and a resource can be something you'd never think counts as one.

Even a strategy is a resource, because the right one lets you do more with what you already have.

It's not about hitting a number. It's about the life you want and what you can use to get there.

What's one thing you've never thought of as a retirement resource?

Most retirement advice is about the numbers. Almost none of it is about the worry.

But the worry is the real problem, and structure is what solves it.

The cash flow system I use was built to help people save, then it turned out to quiet the anxiety of retirement too.

When you know where to go to pay for something, you start enjoying the choice you've earned.

Is it the math that stresses you out, or not knowing how to manage it?

For thirty years you got a paycheck and spent within it.

Then you retire, and suddenly you're the one writing the paycheck, from several smaller streams, with no rules telling you how much to take.

That's why I see people who saved more than enough still worried they'll run out.

The money is there, but the structure isn't.

Have you figured out a system for spending in retirement, or are you still winging it?

“Reflect” is the third and final phase of retirement. This is when you may need some assistance. It could be simple smaller things or full time nursing care. It is important to keep living your life in this stage and overcome the challenges you are able to in order to keep the best quality of life.

This lasts roughly 5 years but can vary. Spending during this phase may increase substantially. This is the phase where you often need much more support. You may need to look at bringing support into your home or look at options to move into a residence that suits your individual needs.

Medical expenses can escalate quickly during this phase. It is usually difficult in this phase to get any of your important documents in place or make changes in your financial structure. Health often deteriorates so not much can be changed at this point. Plan ahead! There are many risks to manage in retirement.

Most people focus on investment risk and longevity risk. However, health cost risk is something to be very mindful of. It can impact your finances significantly. Health risk management is designed to protect income and assets and preserve dignity and lifestyle. You need to know, you will be ok financially no matter what happens. You will not be a burden on your family and your estate planning objectives will be solid.

You must always be comfortable with your financial decisions and know that your advisor is really listening to you. Buxton Financial For Retirement provides a customized approach because needs are often different.

Stop matching your pension to your bills. That's not how retirement income works.

You could have five or more income sources in retirement. Instead of sorting them into "needs" and "wants," ask one question: what life do you want, and what does it cost?

Have you actually priced out the retirement life you want?

The best retirement plans don't pick between stability and growth. They use both.

CPP, OAS, and pensions give you a base you never have to worry about. Market investments give you room to grow and keep up with inflation.

Which side is your plan leaning too heavily on?
