If you claim 70% of your gas bill, the CRA expects to see exactly how you calculated that 70%. It has to be reasonable and backed by a mileage log. 📍

For meals & entertainment expenses, you can only claim 50%. Plus, you need to document who was at the table and the business purpose for the meeting.

You don't submit these receipts with your tax return, but you DO need to save them for 6 years in case the CRA asks to see them.

*To claim medical expenses on your Canadian tax return, costs must be paid to eligible medical practitioners or for eligible medical products and services. In many cases, claiming the total family expenses on the lower-income spouse's return can help maximize the tax benefit. Be sure to keep detailed receipts, prescriptions and invoices showing the amount paid after insurance reimbursements.

*To claim child care expenses on your Canadian tax return, the care must be for a qualifying dependent and be necessary so you (or your spouse/common‑law partner) can work, carry on a business, or go to school. Keep all detailed receipts from eligible providers such as daycares, babysitters, nursery schools and before‑ and after‑school programs.

Did you just buy a new vehicle, laptop, or equipment for your business? ✋ Before you claim the full expense, you need to understand the CRA Half-Year Rule. In the year you acquire a depreciable asset, Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) is limited to 50% of the normal rate, no matter when you bought it.
