Understanding your taxes is one of the most powerful ways to take control of your finances.

Many women in Canada may be eligible for valuable tax deductions and tax credits that can significantly reduce their taxable income- from childcare expense deductions and home office expenses to spousal RRSP contributions and business expense claims.

Whether you’re a working professional, entrepreneur, or managing family finances, knowing which deductions and credits apply to you can help maximize your tax refund and improve long-term financial planning.

This Women’s Day, take a step toward financial confidence and smarter tax planning in Canada.

📩 If you need guidance with tax filing, deductions, or CRA compliance, the team at ASAN is here to help.

“I have a side hustle / side business in the evening - can I still claim HOD on that?”

⸻

💡 Quick Canada Tax Tip: Yes - you can claim home office expenses for your side hustle in Canada, even if it’s part-time or done in the evenings - as long as it qualifies as a business and meets CRA rules. 🇨🇦

Here’s the deal 👇

If you earn income from a registered side business or sole-proprietorship, you can include business-use-of-home expenses on your tax return. This means rent/mortgage interest, utilities, insurance, property taxes, internet, and more that relate to the workspace you use for that business can be deducted - as long as the space is used regularly and mainly for business purposes.

For a part-time evening hustle, CRA says:
• It must be actively used to earn business income.
• Deductible expenses are prorated based on business use.
• You cannot claim more than the net income from the business - you can’t use these deductions to create a tax loss.

So yes - as long as your side hustle is legitimate business income, you’re tracking your hours and expenses, and the space meets CRA criteria, you can claim HOS even if most of your work happens after your day job. 🇨🇦📊

Want a simplified breakdown of what exactly you can claim and how to calculate it for your tax return? Just ask!

If you’re an employer paying salaries, wages, bonuses or any employment income, you must register for a payroll account with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) before your first remittance due date - that’s typically the 15th of the month after you first withhold deductions from pay.

Once registered, your remittance schedule depends on your payroll size - monthly, quarterly or accelerated - and missing deadlines can lead to penalties and interest.

Whether you’re a startup, contractor, or growing business - get your payroll remittance set up the right way, right from the start.

If you’re living in Canada and freelancing for clients in India, GST/HST rules can be confusing - especially for new immigrants.

In this reel, our founder explains whether you need to charge GST/HST when your clients are outside Canada and how the place of supply, type of service, and GST/HST registration threshold impact your tax obligations.

Understanding cross-border freelancing rules with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) can help you stay compliant, avoid penalties, and price your services correctly from day one.

This is a must-watch if you’re a new immigrant, freelancer, consultant, or digital service provider earning foreign income while residing in Canada.
