Great news for employees in BC!

Great news for employees in BC!

We all know someone who’s faced a life-changing illness like cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s, or MS. A serious medical diagnosis like these can change everything. People need time to focus on their health, without worrying about losing their job.

That’s why BC is proposing changes to the Employment Standards Act to support workers during tough times. If passed, workers will be able to take up to 27 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave within a year if they’re dealing with a serious illness or injury.

The leave doesn’t have to be taken all at once—it can be split into multiple periods to support treatment and recovery, with a certificate from a doctor or nurse practitioner.

This is separate from the existing 5 paid sick days and 3 unpaid days already available, bringing BC in line with federal Employment Insurance sickness benefits so workers can access resources to help with treatment and recovery.

If you work in construction industry this will interest you!

Today, BC introduced new legislation to make sure people in construction get paid on time for the work they do.

Late payments have been a long-standing issue in construction — especially for small businesses and tradespeople.

The new Prompt Payment legislation is designed to fix that. Here’s how it works:
• Once a construction invoice is submitted, owners will generally have 28 days to pay.
Contractors are then required to pay their subcontractors within 7 days of receiving payment.
• If there’s a dispute? It goes to an independent adjudicator — not the courts — and gets sorted out in weeks, not months.
• Decisions are binding and if payment doesn’t come through, work can be paused until it does.

By improving cash flow and stability in one of BC’s largest industries, this change helps keep housing, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure projects on track — supporting good jobs, stronger businesses, and a growing economy.
