Just days after trade talks between Canada and the US collapsed, Ottawa answered back yesterday with retaliatory tariffs. Canada announced, effective September 8, that it will apply 15%, 25% and 50% counter-tariffs on more than 700 US products, a dollar-for-dollar response to the 50% US duties that took effect last Saturday.

What looked like a done trade deal days ago has unravelled. Trade talks between Canada and the US collapsed late Friday night, and new 50% U.S. tariffs on roughly US$20 billion (C$28 billion) of Canadian goods took effect at midnight on Saturday, August 22.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the outcome “a miscalculation,” while US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer blamed Canada for introducing last-minute demands.

Last week, Canadian and US trade negotiators worked towards a trade deal. However, talks fell apart at the last minute, resulting in the US imposing 50% tariffs on C$28 billion of Canadian imports beginning on Saturday. Canada pledged to impose retaliatory tariffs. Looking at the week ahead, investors will get a glimpse of the overall health of Canada’s economy when its gross domestic product is announced.

The number of home sales across Canada increased for a fourth straight month in July, new data from the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) shows. Home sales have picked up over the past few months, with signs of better economic conditions emerging.

While several risks could weigh on the improving momentum, Canada’s real estate market looks to be more stable after struggling over much of 2025 and into the early stages of 2026.

Statistics Canada released its Consumer Price Index report for July yesterday, showing inflationary pressures accelerated as gas prices climbed again.

Meanwhile, key measures of core inflation remained close to the Bank of Canada’s (BoC) 2% target, suggesting price pressures may be mostly contained to energy prices. Here’s some key takeaways from the report.

Last week, data out of the US showed that inflationary pressures softened in July, which may alleviate some pressure on the US Federal Reserve Board to raise interest rates at its September meeting. This week, we will learn about Canada’s inflation rate in July.

Did it accelerate? Did it slow? How will it impact the Bank of Canada’s (BoC) next interest rate decision? Beyond inflation, there will be several key economic announcements in Canada and elsewhere that will keep investors busy analyzing how it will impact the global economy and financial markets.
