Throwback Thursday!
This spring during the Value Partners Investments Strategy Session in BigWhite, between some time on the slopes and in the conference room, Roxanne made a point of asking some of the Portfolio Managers, “What will you do in 2026 to find more joy?”
First Up:
Darren Erickson, Portfolio Manager (VPI Global Equity Pool) shared both a personal and a professional goal “more time with the new puppies and to perhaps dispose of a few underperforming holdings to take advantage of better opportunities”
Next:
Finn McKay, Portfolio Manager (Sustainability Leaders Pool) too shared both a personal and a professional goal stating, “more time with friends especially as everyone gets busier with their own families.” Finn believes that longevity is directly connected with the depth of relationships you have with other people and he aspires to a good, long life. Adding professionally, Finn shares “for performance, refining and improving our list of companies following beyond the portfolios so we can make quicker decisions.”
Last, but not least:
Faisal Ahamed and Patrick McCalmont, Portfolio Managers (Canso Investment Counsel Ltd.) otherwise known as the “bond guys” were finding so much joy on the ski hill where they are known to be accomplished skiers. They took a business-first approach in their reply, responding that they are of the opinion of a move to fixed income because of a lot of anticipated equity volatility on the horizon. They discussed the option to redeploy back into equities if markets drop so one has opportunity and the ability to deploy into bonds over a few months/weeks to spread sell volatility out.
As we look ahead, one thing is clear: success isn’t measured only by portfolio performance, it’s also found in meaningful relationships, personal fulfillment, and making thoughtful decisions when opportunities arise. Thank you to Darren, Finn, Faisal, and Patrick for sharing their perspectives.
Here’s to finding more joy, embracing new opportunities, and staying focused on both what matters in life and what matters in investing throughout 2026.
What will you do to find more joy this year?
