The CRA plans to start inviting 1 million Canadians next March to file their 2026 taxes with a return it has already filled in for them. To be considered, a few things need to be done by Oct. 31.

The CRA says you may be invited if you:
- filed your 2025 tax return by Oct. 31, 2026
- have a lower income and a simple, non-taxable situation
- have a CRA account
- set your CRA correspondence preference to "electronic mail"

Being eligible doesn't guarantee an invitation. If you get one, the service is free, and you can check and fix anything before you submit.

Think of a student, or a parent living on a small pension who still files on paper. If their return is simple, helping them sign in to a CRA account now could save them a step next spring.

Either way, keep filing every year. The CRA says that's how you get the benefit and credit payments you're entitled to.

A new ride-hailing service is building up in Regina. CBC reported today that WomenFirst, which uses only female drivers, now has seven drivers in the city and about three rides a day, with a goal of 30.

If you drive for any ride-hailing app as a self-employed contractor, GST works differently for you than for most side income.

The $30,000 small-supplier threshold doesn't apply to ride-sharing. CRA says a self-employed ride-share driver has to register for GST from the first paid ride, and apply within 30 days.

Hypothetical: you drive evenings and bring in $20,000 in fares this year. If GST is charged on top, that's $1,000 that belongs to CRA, not you. Once registered, you can generally claim back the GST you pay on business costs like fuel and repairs.

Some platforms handle part of the GST for their drivers, so ask yours exactly what it collects and sends in.

Regina's 11th Avenue is open again this weekend, after four years of construction between Albert Street and Broad Street.

Chad Boudreau of Comic Readers Downtown told CBC that 2024 and 2025 were the shop's worst years, with the street out front closed.

If those years pushed your business into a loss, that loss can still be worth something.

CRA generally lets a business (non-capital) loss be carried back 3 years or forward 20.
Back: a refund of tax you paid in an earlier profitable year.
Forward: less tax on your profit as customers come back.

Hypothetical: a downtown café corporation lost $30,000 in 2025 and didn't carry it back. If it earns $40,000 in 2026, applying that loss means tax on $10,000 instead of $40,000.

Unused losses usually show on your notice of assessment, or in CRA My Business Account for a corporation. Worth a look before year-end. How best to use them depends on your situation.

FHSA contribution room only starts the year you open your first account. So if you're saving for a first home, opening one before December 31 is worth doing, even with nothing in it.

Open it in 2026 and you get $8,000 of room this year. Leave it empty, and CRA's own example shows your 2027 room becomes $16,000. Open it in January instead, and 2027 starts at $8,000.

Hypothetical: a Saskatoon couple, both first-time buyers, each open an FHSA in November and put nothing in. Next year they could contribute $32,000 between them, and deduct it much like an RRSP.

Two catches. Unlike an RRSP, a contribution made in January or February doesn't count for the year before. And you report the new account on Schedule 15 when you file, even if it's empty.

When you do buy here, Saskatchewan's first-time homebuyers' tax credit is now worth up to $1,575.
