Income Tax Brackets Explained (Canada 2026)

Okay, so let’s talk tax brackets, because a lot of people get this wrong.

Canada has a progressive tax system. Basically, the more you earn, the higher the rate on your extra income. But (and this is the part people miss) moving into a higher bracket does NOT mean all your income gets taxed at that higher rate.

You pay federal tax plus provincial tax. Here are the 2026 federal brackets:

$0 – $58,523 → 14%
$58,523.01 – $117,045 → 20.5%
$117,045.01 – $181,440 → 26%
$181,440.01 – $258,482 → 29%
Over $258,482 → 33%

Here’s the easiest way to think about it. Picture a bunch of buckets. Your first $58,523 goes into the 14% bucket. Once that’s full, the next dollars spill into the 20.5% bucket, and so on. Each bucket only gets taxed at its own rate.

So say you make $70,000:
- Your first $58,523 is taxed at 14%, which is about $8,193
- The other $11,477 is taxed at 20.5%, which is about $2,353
- That’s roughly $10,546 in federal tax (before credits)

That’s only about 15% of your total income, not 20.5%. Pretty different, right?

And please don’t turn down a raise because you’re scared of jumping a bracket. Only the new money gets taxed at the higher rate. A raise always means more money in your pocket.

Your province works the same way with its own brackets, and that gets added on top. Plus credits like the basic personal amount bring your bill down even more.
