One of the easiest things to forget is your beneficiary designation.

Most of us fill it out when we first open an account or buy a policy, and then it never gets another thought.

But life changes.

Marriage.

Children.

Divorce.

Grandchildren.

Sometimes the right decision isn't making a change. It's simply confirming everything is already set up the way you want.

A lot of people have life insurance through their employer and feel like that box is checked.

And it is a good start. But group coverage has a few limitations that are easy to overlook.

It's tied to your job, and the amount is usually based on your salary. For a lot of families, that may not be enough.

It's worth taking a few minutes to understand what you have and whether it actually covers what you need it to.

Happy to help if you'd like to find out.

I have been posting a lot lately about life insurance and making sure the right coverage is in place for the right reasons.

The question that usually follows is how do you actually know what the right amount looks like?

Starting with a needs analysis, we can identify what coverage makes sense for your situation, compare rates across carriers to find the best fit at the right price, and stack that up against what you already have.

It all comes together in one simple report.

And it takes about five minutes.

If that sounds like something worth doing, I am happy to help.

For a lot of people, the first thing they think about with life insurance is paying off the mortgage.

Which makes sense. It's usually the biggest debt.

But for a lot of families, paying off the mortgage isn't enough. The income that was supporting everything else needs to be replaced too.

Because if it stops, it's not just the mortgage that becomes a problem. It's groceries, childcare, bills, everything that paycheque was taking care of.

Happy to help if you want to take a closer look.

When you get a mortgage, life insurance through your lender usually comes up in the same conversation.

It's convenient and it gets set up quickly. But there are a few things about it that aren't always obvious.

The benefit goes to the lender, not your family. The coverage decreases as the mortgage gets paid down. And it's tied to the loan, so it doesn't necessarily follow you if you move or refinance.

A personal policy works differently. The money goes directly to whoever you choose, the coverage stays level, and it follows you regardless of what you do with the property.

It's worth understanding which one you have and what it's actually doing for your family.

Happy to help if you want a closer look.

A question I hear fairly often, usually said with a bit of a laugh:

"We keep saying we need to get a will done."

Most people who say it aren't being careless. Life is busy. It doesn't feel urgent on a normal Tuesday.

But a will isn't really about what you own. It's about who makes decisions if you can't. Who looks after the people who depend on you. Who knows what you actually wanted.

Those aren't small things to leave to chance.

If it's something you've been meaning to get to, this is a good reminder that it doesn't have to be complicated. It just has to get done.

Happy to point you in the right direction if you're not sure where to start.

Most people set up their life insurance and never really look at it again.

When they bought a home. When they had kids. When it came up at work.

It made sense at the time. It fit where they were.

But life keeps moving. The coverage usually doesn't.

A family grows. A mortgage gets paid down. Income changes. Sometimes a relationship does too.

None of that automatically updates a policy. And most people don't think to look until something prompts them to.

If it's been a few years since you've looked at yours, it's probably worth a few minutes to make sure it still fits where you are today.

Happy to help if you're not sure where to start.

It’s easy to think investing is mostly about picking the right portfolio.

But over time, I’ve found the bigger difference usually comes from how everything around the investments is structured.

Liquidity.
Taxes.
Debt.
Income needs.
How comfortable someone actually is during difficult markets.

Two people can have very similar investments and still end up with very different results depending on how the overall plan is put together.

One of the hardest parts of financial planning is that most important decisions have to be made before the outcome is known.

Before markets recover.
Before health changes.
Before something unexpected happens.

That’s why good planning usually has less to do with prediction and more to do with preparation.

The goal isn’t to guess the future perfectly. It’s to make sure a bad moment doesn’t permanently change the long-term picture.

A common assumption with mortgage insurance is that as long as the mortgage is covered, everything is taken care of.

But the coverage often decreases over time, while the cost stays the same.

And it’s tied to the loan, not the person or family behind it.

So, while the debt may be covered, the bigger question is what happens beyond that.

The mortgage is just one piece of the overall picture.
