According to recent reports from the Swiss State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO), the country's economic growth has remained stagnant in the fourth quarter of 2023 despite hopes for a recovery. This challenging international situation has had a major impact on manufacturing and exports, causing stagnation in the country's economic performance.
"While economic performance in 2022 was boosted by the recovery from the pandemic, at the same time, it was held back by the tense energy situation in Europe and a gloomy international environment," according to SECO.
President of the central bank Thomas Jordan further lowered growth forecasts for 2024, saying that Switzerland would need to be "lucky" to register any growth this year due to the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic. He said: "The coronavirus pandemic is still far from over and its consequences are still being felt."
What does this mean for investors? How can they protect their wealth during these uncertain times? These are just some of the questions that our team of expert financial advisors at deVere Group can help answer.
We understand that these are challenging times for everyone. However, experts believe that if Switzerland can weather this difficult period then there is potential for a stronger recovery as soon as later this year. With hopes of returning to normalcy after a tumultuous 2020-21 period, it is hoped that Switzerland will experience an increase in consumer spending which could help kickstart its economy once again.
As President Jordan states, "It's essential that both businesses and consumers continue to be cautious with their money so that they can weather these tough financial times together."
