Required Disclosures – IAS 2

IAS 2 requires disclosure of key information related to inventories:

1. Accounting Policies
The accounting policies used to measure inventories, including the cost formula applied, such as FIFO or Weighted Average.

2. Carrying Amount
The total carrying amount of inventories, including appropriate classifications such as Raw Materials, WIP, and Finished Goods.

3. Recognized Expense
The amount of inventories recognized as an expense (COGS) during the financial period.

4. Write-Downs & Reversals
The amount of inventory write-downs recognized as an expense, along with any reversals of previous write-downs.

Ownership & Recognition

1. Control & Ownership

- Inventory recognition depends on the transfer of risks, rewards, and control, not simply physical location.
- Third-Party Storage: Goods owned by the entity but held by a third party remain in inventory.
- Consignment: Goods held on consignment but owned by others are excluded from inventory.
- Goods in Transit: Ownership depends on shipping and contractual terms, such as FOB Shipping Point vs. FOB Destination.

2. Expense Recognition

- When inventory is sold, its carrying amount is recognized as an expense (Cost of Goods Sold).
- COGS is recognized in the same period as the related revenue, following the matching principle.
- Inventory write-downs to NRV are recognized as an expense in the period the write-down occurs.
