TAX DECLARATION DEADLINES

A reminder that the deadlines for submitting your French income tax declarations for 2025 income are fast approaching.

Tuesday 19th May - paper declarations
Thursday 21st May - departements 1-19 + non residents
Thursday 28th May - departements 20-54
Thursday 4th June - departements 55 onwards

Any declaration made beyond this date can be subject to fines.

This time, unfortunately it's not a scam.

The national register of bank accounts (run by the tax office) was hacked recently and personal information relating to 1.2 million bank accounts were accessed. This included full bank details, names, addresses, dates and places of birth and in some cases tax numbers.

Those affected will have received an email like the one below from the tax office. You should check your account regularly to ensure that no new fraudulent debits have been set up by the hackers.

Most importantly, you are urged to be very wary of calls supposedly from your bank (confirming your personal info and iban details over the phone) as they may try to gain access to your bank account and lighten the balance ...

If you receive a call on your mobile from your bank, NEVER ACCESS YOUR BANKING APP while on the call. Some of our clients have already been victim to this sort of scam and have never recovered the thousands of euros stolen.

If you receive a call from your bank that you suspect is fraudulent, hang up and call your bank directly.

BEWARE - SCAMS

In the latest round of scam emails, watch out for one that allegedly is sent by la DGFIP (the tax office) saying that they have discovered that you hold crypto accounts that you have not declared in your tax declaration. They then ask you to rectify your declaration within 30 days to avoid any fines.

With the progress in AI, these scam emails now look professional and are very well written - they are no longer riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes. They can easily mislead you into pressing the "start my declaration" button and ultimately losing your investments.

Please verify the sender's email address (and not just the name of the sender) for all emails that request personal information.

For anyone who has missed this, if you are a dual national (UK and any other nationality), you MUST use your UK passport to enter the UK as of 25th February.

SPAM EMAILS - ANTAI

A number of clients have received emails recently supposedly from ANTAI, the department handling speeding fines.

These emails look legitimate and include the Antai and Republique Francaise logos and request quick payment in order to receive a reduction in the cost of the fine, generally by means of a refund after you pay the full amount....

If you receive such an email, PLEASE CHECK THE EMAIL ADDRESS OF THE SENDER. They may have antai / amendes / gouv.fr etc as part of their email but email addresses ending .in, .com, .lk or .org are NOT from the French government.

Emails from Antai come from [email protected]

Others have received similar requests by SMS. DO NOT click on any link received by email but instead go to the Antai site directly.

PRÉFECTURE OPENING TIMES WITHOUT RENDEZ-VOUS

The very useful opening times for carte de séjour enquiries / follow up without a rendez vous is coming to a « temporary » end on Friday because of works that are starting at the prefecture.

During the works, only those with a fixed rendez-vous or a convocation to pick up a carte de séjour will be allowed access.

No expected end date has been given.

Just a reminder that there are only 10 days left to file your income tax declarations if you live in the 06 (and all departements from 1-19) or are a non resident.

Paper declarations must be submitted even sooner - by 20th May.

Also, please note that if you receive an email subject ESCALE, this is probably a legitimate email from your tax office. Escale is the secure file sharing platform used by the tax office. They could be requesting additional information relating to your declaration. PLEASE DON'T IGNORE IT!
