If your retirement plans involve sunshine, moving back to the UK is unlikely to be at the top of your bucket list. But some have already been persuaded and in the 2025/26 tax year, 143,000 UK British nationals returned to the UK. Of this group, 12,000 were over-65s, according to the Office for National Statistics.

If you are thinking about moving back to the UK, considering a number of different aspects and how they compare in different countries could help clarify your decision; read more on tax implications for returning expats here https://www.mcknightassociates.co.uk/article/detail/sjpp/coming-home-to-retire-tax-implications-for-returning-expacts.html

Political leadership has been extremely changeable in recent years; and Sir Keir Starmer’s recent resignation as prime minister has put the spotlight back on economic growth. For UK businesses, the challenge remains consistent: how do we create sustainable growth in an environment that continues to test confidence and resilience? For SME leaders, this question is more important than ever.

Martin Brown, CEO of business advisory firm Elephants Child, discusses the trends they are seeing in the SME market this year: https://www.mcknightassociates.co.uk/article/detail/sjpp/five-trends-defining-the-uk-sme-market-in-2026.html

Annuities have been steadily growing in popularity - more than 88,000 people bought an annuity in the 2024/25 tax year, compared with around 82,000 people the previous year, according to Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) data.

For some, annuities offer a structured way to draw on pension wealth and enjoy the benefits now, rather than allowing it to accumulate. This insight https://www.mcknightassociates.co.uk/article/detail/sjpp/the-axable-benefits-of-buying-an-annuity.html shares more on what is annuity, why they are back in investment-fashion and what are the taxable benefits?

Women are earning, creating, inheriting and managing more wealth than ever before - yet research suggests this is not matched by engagement with long-term financial decisions. This is according to St. James’s Place Financial Health Report 2026: Women and Wealth, published on 24th of June.

The report shows while women take the lead with day-to-day household budgeting, they are less confident and engaged than men about managing long-term finances.

Despite the many challenges, the research points to reasons for optimism as, among younger women (those aged 18 to 34) more than 4 in 10 have a financial plan, while higher numbers are investing - which suggests a potentially positive shift.

In a report published on 23 June, HMRC confirmed there will be a 22% charge on interest earned on any cash holdings in a non-cash ISA from April next year.

Explaining the new charge, HMRC said it would "minimise the opportunity for the lower cash ISA limit to be circumvented, while preserving the flexibility needed for legitimate investment activity within non-cash ISAs."
