For many people, a pension is one of their biggest assets, but from April 2027, it could also become an important inheritance tax (IHT) consideration. From this date, most unused pension funds will be included when the value of someone's estate is calculated for IHT purposes.

For some families, this will make little difference. For others, especially those with larger pension pots or estates, it could mean that more tax is due and less wealth passes to loved ones.

In this article, we explain what’s changing, who may be affected and some practical steps to consider ⬇️ https://www.mcknightassociates.co.uk/article/detail/sjpp/how-pension-changes-could-affect-your-inheritance-tax-plans.html

Short term market corrections are an inherent part of investing - falls of 10% or more happen roughly one in every three years - it is essential to invest with a long-term perspective, looking through brief periods of market fluctuations.

So how do you make a financial plan, when the world is so uncertain? ⬇️ www.mcknightassociates.co.uk/article/detail/sjpp/keeping-perspective-as-the-iran-conflict-resumes.html

📝 The value of an investment with St. James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select, and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

Achieving a successful handover of your business to a family member can come down to three aspects: early planning (ideally five to 10 years in advance), having a full understanding of the value of the business, plus open communication with all involved parties to ensure fairness.

Chris Everard, business growth adviser at business advisory company Elephants Child, says: “One of the greatest misconceptions in family business succession is that it’s simply about passing ownership from one generation to the next. In reality, it’s about preserving two things simultaneously - the future value of the business and the family's long-term wealth.”

So how do you plan ahead for business succession? ⬇️ https://www.mcknightassociates.co.uk/article/detail/sjpp/keeping-it-in-the-family-planning-ahead-for-business-succession.html

Government urged to make pensions and IHT rules fairer - the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) is urging the government to review some of the rules around how inheritance tax (IHT) on pensions will be handled next year.

From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will count towards the value of an estate for IHT purposes.

But the CIOT has warned that some of the rules for pensions after death, in cases where IHT will apply on an estate, run the risk of creating unfairness, disputes and delays. Read the latest WeekWatch here ⬇️ https://www.mcknightassociates.co.uk/article/detail/sjpp/weekwatch-17-08-2026.html

The traditional nuclear family is less common than it once was, with family life today taking many different forms - this means that having a say on what assets you want to leave to whom, through a Will, has never been as important.

According to the 2025 National Wills Report, 79% of UK adults are comfortable talking about death, yet when it comes to considering finances, only 36% of people have made a Will. This highlights the uncomfortable gap many of us fall into between discussing and doing.

In May, McKnight Associates’ Steve McKnight travelled to Nkhotakota, Malawi for his 6th trip with on a renovation and building project.

The goal was for the volunteer team to build three classrooms, a teachers house and renovate one of the existing schools; and raise a further £25,500 for the project!

… and the amazing 2026 volunteers raised an incredible £26,374.85 🙌

🎥 this highlights video is a small collection of the photos and videos Steve came home with late May, but what’s pretty special is that one of the videos shows moments when Steve and the volunteers visited a school they had built on a volunteer trip in 2024! Priceless.

Sending a very big thank you to everyone who donated, sponsored and supported this volunteer trip in any way - your kindness has made a real and lasting difference to the local community 😊
