New process for reporting VAT errors

The old VAT652 form has been withdrawn - most VAT errors now need to be notified online via your Government Gateway.

Why it matters: Penalties for careless errors can reach 30%, deliberate errors 70–100%.
Taking reasonable care with records and compliance is your best defence.

Paying High Income Child Benefit Charge via PAYE

HMRC now lets you pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) through PAYE by adjusting your tax code - no need for a self assessment return if that’s your only reason to file. Act before 31 January after the relevant tax year.

Start the process online via the HMRC app or Government Gateway.

Capital Gains Tax

Private Residence Relief – and 2,000 bottles of wine 🍷

When Mr & Mrs Eyre sold their Chelsea home for £27.75m, HMRC claimed the sale was a trading venture, not the sale of their main residence, and demanded £3.3m in Capital Gains Tax.

Inheritance Tax Update 🚜

Changes to Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR from April 2026 were expected to increase IHT, but recent announcements have softened the impact.

The 100% relief allowance is rising to £2.5m per person and will be transferable between spouses and civil partners, allowing couples to pass on up to £5m of qualifying business or agricultural assets IHT-free, plus existing allowances.
