Opening a gym is basically one big game of “oh… I didn’t realise THAT would cost that much” 😂

It’s easy to get caught up in finding the premises, choosing the equipment, planning the fit-out and thinking about how you’re actually going to get people through the doors.

But somewhere amongst all of that, the numbers need to work too.

How much will it actually cost to open?

What will your monthly costs be once you do?

How much does the gym need to earn?

How many members do you actually need?

How long can you afford for it to take to get there?

And what does the gym need to make for YOU to get paid too?

A very glamorous day in the life: non-work day edition 😂

School run, coffee, gym, pretending the kitchen chores will ever actually end, then back out for school pick-up.

Took the kids to get a present for their friend, which obviously turned into a McFlurrys for them too.

Then home to watch an old series of The Traitors because the kids are currently OBSESSED, followed by pizza and Prosecco night 🍕

And yes, the pizza and Prosecco were calorie counted 😂

Pretty much my ideal kind of Friday.

I didn’t start Koyn Accountancy because I had a big vision.
I started it because I had two small kids.
Because nursery fees were ridiculous.
Because Covid threw everything up in the air.
And because trying to make a 9–5 fit around family life felt impossible.

So I created something of my own.
At first, it was just about flexibility. Paying the bills. Making it work.

But then I found my niche… supporting fitness businesses.
People who work hard, move fast, and care deeply about what they’re building.
They just needed someone to make the numbers make sense.

I didn’t plan for this business to become what it is today.
But I’m so glad it did.

If tax payments hit like a kettlebell to the face…
It’s not a tax problem.
It’s a planning problem.

Here’s what should go in your tax pot each month:

✅ VAT – if you charge it, it’s not your money. Don’t know your VAT bill yet? Save 20% of income.
✅ Corporation Tax – based on profit, not income. Not tracking profit yet? Save 15% of income.
✅ PAYE – from your payroll. Whoever runs it should give you that figure monthly.

This isn’t about fear — it’s about calm, control and clarity.
