Many people are unaware that the amount that can be claimed for business journeys made in your own car or van has increased.

From 6 April 2026, the approved rate is:

🚗 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles
🚗 25p per mile for any additional business miles

The new 55p rate has increased from 45p and applies retrospectively from the start of the 2026/27 tax year.

Employers can choose how much they reimburse, but where an employee receives less than the approved rate, they may be able to claim tax relief on the difference.

The same mileage rates can also be used by eligible self-employed people who calculate their vehicle costs using simplified expenses.

Not sure what you can claim or how the change affects your business records? Speak to our Baldock team for advice.

If your 31st July Payment on Account is due and you're worried about paying it in full, don't ignore it.

HMRC's Time to Pay service may allow you to spread the cost through affordable monthly instalments, helping you avoid further financial pressure.

It's important to act before the payment deadline, as leaving it too late could result in interest and penalties.

If you're unsure of your options or need advice, the team at McColes & Co can help you understand what's available and keep you on track.

A reminder for Self Assessment taxpayers: your second payment on account is due by 31 July.

This applies if HMRC has asked you to make payments on account towards your next tax bill.

If you are worried about meeting the payment deadline, do not panic. You may be able to spread the cost by setting up a Time to Pay instalment plan via GOV.UK before the deadline.

Acting early can help reduce the risk of penalties and late-payment interest, so it's important not to leave it until the last minute.

If you need any support with Self-Assessment, our Baldock team is here to help - get in touch today.

From 25 June to 1 September 2026, a temporary 5% VAT rate will apply to certain family-focused supplies, including some children’s meals, children’s tickets for cinemas, theatres, concerts, exhibitions and shows, and admission to qualifying attractions.

If your business is participating, now is the time to:

✅ Check which sales qualify
✅ Update tills, booking systems and pricing
✅ Make sure children’s meals/tickets are clearly marketed and priced
✅ Review bundles, add-ons and upgrades separately
✅ Keep clear VAT records and adjust prepayments where needed

Not every sale will qualify, so it is important to apply the rules carefully.

Need help understanding how the temporary VAT change affects your business? Speak to our Baldock team today.
