Just a reminder 👇

If you were due to make a Self Assessment Payment on Account by 31 July and still haven't paid it, HMRC will now be charging late payment interest on the outstanding amount until it's cleared.

A lot of people don't realise that even if no late payment penalty has been issued, interest starts accruing from the day after the deadline.

If you're unsure whether you had a payment due, it's worth checking your HMRC online account sooner rather than later.

💡 The longer it's left unpaid, the more interest builds up.

📢 Making Tax Digital (MTD) – First Deadline Approaching! 📢
A quick reminder for self-employed individuals and landlords who have joined Making Tax Digital for Income Tax this year – your first quarterly update is due by 7 August 2026.

✅ This applies if your combined self-employment and property income was over £50,000 and you're now within the first phase of MTD.

Don't panic though...

💡 This is not a tax payment and it's not a traditional tax return. You're simply sending HMRC a summary of your income and expenses for the period 6 April 2026 to 5 July 2026 (or 1st April to 30th June depending on your year end) using MTD-compatible software.

If you've never submitted an MTD update before, now is a great time to make sure:
✔️ You're registered for MTD
✔️ Your bookkeeping records are up to date
✔️ You're using compatible software
✔️ You're ready for the 7 August deadline

📅 The deadline might be new, but getting prepared doesn't have to be stressful.

🚨 Self Assessment Reminder – Payment on Account Due 31 July 🚨

A quick reminder for anyone who completes a Self Assessment tax return – the second Payment on Account is due by 31 July 2026.

Payments on account are usually made in two instalments, due on 31 January and 31 July each year.

This often catches people out because it arrives in the middle of summer, long after the January filing deadline has been forgotten!

✅ You may need to make a payment if:
• You are self-employed, a landlord, or have other untaxed income.
• Your previous Self Assessment tax bill was over £1,000.
• Less than 80% of your tax was collected at source.

💡 Remember, a Payment on Account is an advance payment towards your next tax bill, based on your previous year's liability. If your income has reduced since then, you may be able to apply to reduce the payment.

⚠️ Missing the deadline can result in interest being charged on the outstanding amount.

📢 A reminder for anyone affected by Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
For sole traders and landlords who joined MTD from 6 April 2026, the first quarterly update is due by 7 August 2026.

If you're affected, now is a good time to make sure your records are up to date and that you're comfortable using your MTD-compatible software.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that MTD means paying tax four times a year. It doesn't. The quarterly submissions are simply updates of your income and expenses, with tax still calculated and paid through the normal process.

As with any new system, there will be a learning curve, but taking a little time to prepare now should make the first submission much less stressful.

🚗 Mileage Rate Increase – What this means for you as a business owner
If you’re a sole trader or company director using your own car for work, this is a really positive update 👇
From 6 April 2026, HMRC has increased the mileage rate from 45p to 55p per mile (for the first 10,000 business miles).

Why this is good news for you:

Sole traders:
You can now claim more against your profits, reducing your tax bill

Company directors (using your own car):
Your company can pay you 55p per mile tax-free – no tax, no NI

Catch-up opportunity:
The increase is backdated to 6 April 2026, so you may be able to top up earlier claims this year [moneysavin...expert.com]

📊 Quick reminder of the rules:

55p per mile – first 10,000 business miles
25p per mile – over 10,000 (unchanged) [gov.uk]
Applies when using your own personal vehicle for business

💡 For many owner-managed businesses, this is one of the simplest and most tax-efficient ways to extract money from the company.

If you’re not currently claiming mileage – or not sure if you’re doing it correctly – it’s definitely worth a quick review.
