The relief when you see the email subject: "Your CPD has been approved" ☺️ 🙌

Following on from my last post about CPD monitoring, this is the email that brings a sense of relief to anyone working in a regulated profession.

In short, it means I've once again satisfied the requirements of our regulatory body, the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians), and can continue providing services to our clients 🤝

CPD (Continuing Professional Development) is how we demonstrate that our knowledge and skills remain up to date.

Without maintaining and evidencing CPD, we could ultimately lose our licence to practise.

Phew! 😇

The moment you see the email subject: "You've been selected for CPD monitoring"... 😳

I won't lie, my heart sank for a moment!

After checking I'd actually logged everything properly, it reminded me why CPD (Continuing Professional Development) is such an important part of being a professional accountant.

Behind the scenes, the accounting world never stands still. Tax legislation changes, payroll rules are updated, Companies House requirements evolve, software develops, and compliance obligations continue to grow. Keeping up to date isn't just good practice, it's essential.

CPD can include attending webinars, reading technical updates, researching changes in legislation, completing training courses, learning new software, and continually developing the knowledge needed to support clients effectively.

The rules don't stand still, so neither can we. CPD monitoring helps ensure accountants continue to develop their knowledge and skills, giving clients confidence that the advice they receive is based on current regulations and best practice.

It serves as a good reminder that being an accountant isn't just about what we already know, but about continually learning so we can provide the best possible service to our clients... even if we'd sometimes rather the monitoring email didn't arrive! 😅

Hopefully you've heard of MTD for IT by now, but here's a quick run through.

In short, if you declared an INCOME of £50k or more in your 2024/25 tax return through self-employment and/or property, then get ready to file your first quarter's MTD return, due into HMRC by 7th August 2026.

It's not too late to register yourself for MTD IT though, and we'd be happy to help 😊

Spam and phishing emails VS legitimate emails from HMRC and Companies House! 🔍

What would stand out to you on this email to make you question it's authenticity?

I received this email from Companies House today encouraging me to complete the ID verification for ACSP.
I was expecting this ID check to inevitably come through to me, HOWEVER, it went through to my Junk mail and there were a couple of things that prevented me from clicking on the link... 🤔

🤫 I'll be honest and admit I couldn't quite remember the usual email domain (the ending of the email address) from Companies House, but when I hovered over the link *displaying* as https://www.gov.uk (looks totally legit, right), it then showed something else - a link to a jotform. That's when my suspicions shot up!

❌Companies House and HMRC do not use Jotform for fact finding!

✅I then did a quick search on the internet, and take note:
HMRC send emails using the domain .gov.uk
Likewise, Companies House use the .gov.uk email domain.

Moral of the story, trust why your email account may have marked something as Junk. If you still have doubts, run an internet search and use results provided by .gov.uk or CH.

I'll never know what that link clicked through to, but hey, FOMO isn't always a thing! 😎
