If your nanny might be coming too, now is the time to work out the details, not when everyone is standing in the airport departure lounge.

Some of the questions worth answering before you book are:

Is your nanny working or taking annual leave?
Will their normal hours change?
Will you need evening babysitting?
Who is paying for travel and accommodation?
What happens if a bank holiday is involved?

Your family going away does not automatically make the same dates your nanny's annual leave, and if you want them to take holiday while you are away, the appropriate contract and notice rules need to be followed.

The qualifying period for ordinary unfair dismissal claims is expected to reduce from two years to six months across Great Britain.

Now comes the bit many parents don't expect:

When you employ a nanny, you're also an employer.

That means employment law applies to you too.

And from 1 January 2027, the qualifying period for ordinary unfair dismissal claims is expected to reduce from two years to six months in England, Scotland and Wales.

The first six months of employment will become even more important.

Now is the perfect time to review your nanny's contract, probation period and payroll arrangements.

Remember, probation doesn't change your responsibilities as an employer.

Your nanny should still be set up correctly on payroll, receive payslips, accrue holiday entitlement and be assessed for workplace pension enrolment from day one.
