A home should mean safe. Always.

This week marks the second annual Domestic Abuse Awareness Week, under the theme ‘Home Should Mean Safe’, an initiative formed by Women's Aid Federation Northern Ireland, the Men's Advisory Project, the Housing Executive and the Police Service of Northern Ireland. A powerful reminder that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and supported.

At BDO Northern Ireland, we recognise the importance of creating space for open, informed conversations about difficult issues, including domestic abuse and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).

Through our Lived Experience Network, we recently held a second session focused on VAWG, led by Colin Downey encouraging colleagues to build understanding, challenge attitudes and reflect on the role we can all play in creating safer environments at home and beyond.

The road to employment starts with exploring the possibilities. 🎓

We were delighted to contribute to Queen's Business School’s The Road to Employment Undergraduate Information Webinar last night, helping students gain a better understanding of the opportunities a career in business can offer.

Our Partner and Head of Audit, Laura Jackson joined the session to share an employer’s perspective, alongside one of our former placement students, Adam, who will be returning to after graduation! A fantastic example of how placement opportunities can be the first step towards a future career.

We hope the session helped answer questions, build confidence and inspire the next generation of business professionals as they consider their options beyond university.

Networking: 10/10. Footwork: debatable. Mud coverage: comprehensive.

It's been a busy time for our team raising money for our chosen charity, Cancer Fund for Children. From serving up some friendly competition on the padel court Padel 54 to getting well and truly stuck in at the bog run Castlewellan Forest Park, both events brought people together for a great cause.

Our paddlers raised just under £500 while our Bog Runners collated £1,400 in sponsorship. Not a bad total for 3 weeks work 🙂

Proof that corporate fundraising doesn't always mean a black tie and a raffle ticket. Sometimes it means a padel racket. Sometimes it means accepting that your washing machine is about to have a very busy day...

We've served, slogged and got stuck in… what's next? We're open to suggestions (within reason… probably).

This Baby Loss Awareness Week, we’re supporting an important initiative that shines a light on an experience that can be deeply personal, painful and difficult to talk about.

We understand the magnitude of baby loss and the impact it can have on individuals, couples, families and those around them. Yet for many, it remains something that is experienced in silence.

As a firm, we believe in creating a culture where people feel seen, supported and able to talk about difficult experiences without fear of judgement.

This week, we’re helping to break the silence, raise awareness and remind anyone affected by baby loss that they are not alone. 💗

Lived experiences heard. Real voices. Real change.

This World Mental Health Day, alongside the World Federation for Mental Health and World Health Organization (WHO), we’re reflecting on the importance of being heard and of creating spaces where people feel able to speak openly about their experiences.

That’s at the heart of our Lived Experience Network. Creating a workplace where people can share their experiences, learn from one another and help shape positive change.

Because sometimes, looking after our mental health starts with something as simple, and as important, as talking, listening and knowing that someone is there to hear you. And while World Mental Health Day gives us an important moment to pause and reflect, we know that mental health isn’t something that is felt, experienced or talked about on just one day of the year.

So, let today be a reminder to check in with us, and with each other and to keep the conversation going.

Real voices matter. Being heard matters. And looking after our mental health matters, every day.

Good luck to members Rab Smith, his wife Robyn, Clodagh Devlin and Laurene Agnew, who are taking on the Cancer Fund for Children Bog Run at Castlewellan Forest Park!

This is the 10th and final Bog Run, making it an extra special year to take part. The event is a 5km muddy obstacle course which takes participants off the forest path and through mud pits, bushes and obstacles, with the senior course even including a section through the lake...rather you than us, guys! 🏃‍♀️🏃

Most importantly, the Bog Run raises vital funds for our charity partner, Cancer Fund for Children, which supports children and young people affected by cancer, as well as their families, through emotional, social and therapeutic support.
