The new Prime Minister’s early signals on tax and spending are welcome but for Northern Ireland, the reality is more complicated...

The proposed VAT cut on electricity is a good example. Under the Windsor Framework, VAT on goods follow EU rules, and any change would require agreement at that level, something that will not happen quickly enough to impact bills in the near term. As a result, the savings will be issued via Stormont.

There are more encouraging signs ahead. After years of frozen thresholds, a long-overdue increase in the personal allowance now looks firmly on the table for the Autumn Budget. That would go some way in addressing fiscal drag and easing some pressure on households and PAYE bills for employers.

Our team will continue to monitor and update on any further developments.

Our team in focus! 🎯

Rosemary’s incredible 29-year loyalty to our firm is mirrored in the devotion she shows to her animals. A lifelong equestrian, she has always owned horses, from Irish Sport Horses to Connemaras, like her current horse, Riley. She is also a proud dog mum to her beloved pups, Brodi and Franki. 🐴🐕

Thank you, Rosemary, for your unwavering commitment and immense contribution to BDO NI. We truly couldn’t appreciate you more! 😊

We are thrilled to share that we have achieved Silver Diversity Mark accreditation, recognising our continued commitment to building a diverse, inclusive workplace, where everyone feels valued, supported and able to thrive. ✨

Laura Jackson FCA, Audit Partner at BDO NI said: “This is an important milestone for BDO NI and one that reflects the genuine commitment of our people right across the firm. It recognises the intentional work we have been doing to keep our workplace inclusive and meritocratic, whilst acknowledging there is unconscious bias and other barriers we must tackle and keep on our radar.

“We hope to support others in our ecosystem who are considering this journey because progress like this lifts everyone. Our focus now is on continuing that progress until inclusion and equality of opportunity are embedded as standard.”

Christine White, Director of Diversity Mark adds: “Congratulations to everyone at BDO NI on achieving the Silver Diversity Mark Accreditation. This recognition reflects the commitment, leadership and sustained action that has been taken to embed diversity and inclusion across the organisation.

“Our independent assessment panel was particularly impressed by BDO NI’s work to champion inclusion beyond its own organisation, including its leadership on social mobility and its commitment to listening to employee lived experience to shape meaningful change. Achieving Silver is an important milestone, demonstrating measurable progress while recognising that creating truly inclusive workplaces is an ongoing journey. We look forward to continuing to support BDO NI as they build on this excellent foundation.”

Huge thanks to every single person in our team playing a part in this journey and to Diversity Mark for their support and guidance.

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY! 🗓️ A mid-summer reminder for Northern Ireland's business owners, directors, and self-employed professionals: July 31st is the deadline for your second HMRC Payment on Account.

July is notoriously a tough month for corporate cash flow with summer shutdowns and holiday tracking, so ensuring your personal tax liabilities are budgeted for is essential. ⏳

If your income dropped significantly this past year, remember you can apply to reduce this payment, but do it before the July 31st buzzer to avoid automated interest penalties✔️

We're pleased to share a conversation between James Pomeroy, Global Economist at HSBC, and Adam Faulkner, Placement Trainee with BDO Northern Ireland Advisory. This was recorded during our recent Economic Breakfast Briefing, hosted in partnership between HSBC, Tughans LLP and BDO NI.

Currently studying at Queen's University Belfast, Adam speaks with James about the HSBC Research Gamechangers report, exploring the macroeconomic impact of AI adoption. Together, they discuss what the rapid evolution of AI means from the perspective of an undergraduate preparing for the future of work and how the professional services sector is likely to evolve.

If you're interested in hearing more on this topic, James also shares insights from conversations with Cara Fitzgerald Whitman in HSBC Research's Brews & Views series. Filmed while travelling with the England team during the FIFA World Cup, this series explores how AI is reshaping economies, businesses, and careers.

A sincere thank you to James for sharing his time, expertise, and thought-provoking insights.
