Our Autumn Xero Drop In is Thursday 22 October, 2pm to 4pm at the Belper office. Informal, no presentation, no sitting through anyone else's questions. Bring the thing that has been bugging you and we will work through it with you.

The reconciliation that will not reconcile. A report you are sure exists but cannot find. Bank feeds. Repeating invoices. The bit you have been doing the long way round for two years without knowing there was a short way.

Week two of our own bake off, and this time it was Emma, one of our senior accountants.

It did not start well. The first go was a cake. By Emma's own account it tasted good but the icing was very bad, so that one was scrapped and round two began.

Round two was chocolate orange cupcakes, with a few plain ones for Robert. Robert also took the photos, so he earned them.

Eleven of us still to bake.

In fairness, so do most people. He’s just more direct about it.

For the record, it had already been opened. He’s destructive, not obstructive. 🐾

This came in last week and we have not stopped thinking about it.

Our own bake off has started, and Lucie was up first.

We each drew a name at the start of the series. Lucie's was the first to go, and by a coincidence nobody planned, it happened on biscuit week. So biscuits it was.

Chocolate chip, made to Karen's recipe. Karen's chocolate chip biscuits are famous round here, so borrowing it was either a very smart move or a very brave one.

Thirteen of us are in this, so there is a lot more baking still to come.

Today is the deadline.

If you needed to register for Self Assessment for the 2025/26 tax year, today is the day. 5 October.

It applies if you started working for yourself, became a partner in a partnership, or had income HMRC does not already know about. Rental income, dividends, a side business.

Registering takes a few minutes. Leaving it is where the penalties come from.

Everyone knows the Self Assessment deadline is in January.

Fewer people know about the one on 5 October.

If you started working for yourself during the 2025/26 tax year, or you had income HMRC does not already know about, you need to register for Self Assessment by 5 October 2026. That is Monday.

Miss it and HMRC can charge a penalty.

It takes a few minutes to check whether it applies to you. Rather less time than sorting it out afterwards.
