📈 Kicking off a new accountancy role? Congratulations on the exciting journey ahead! To ensure your success, consider these strategic steps:

🎯 Focus on Expectations: Align your goals with your manager's priorities. Understand your daily responsibilities, your manager's preferred style, and the key performance indicators (KPIs) for evaluation.

🚀 Demonstrate Skills and Attitude: Leverage your accountancy expertise effectively. Find ways your previous experience can benefit your new company. Adapt to diverse working styles and build strong relationships through effective communication, flexibility, and proactive problem-solving.

💼 Develop Good Habits: Uphold professionalism, steer clear of workplace gossip, and prioritize early results. Engage with your colleagues by offering support and proactively seeking tasks.

👂 Practice Active Listening: Dive into deep listening to gather valuable insights about the company, your role, and the industry. Avoid making assumptions and actively listen to your peers for enhanced understanding.

📚 Embrace Continuous Learning: Recognize the value of ongoing learning. Once you've grasped your role's parameters and goals, explore opportunities for further development with your manager. Consider enrolling in relevant courses or in-house training programs.

🔓 Let Go of Limiting Habits: Identify and shed old habits or mindsets that may impede your progress. Learn to say 'no' when necessary, tackle procrastination head-on, and release the fear of failure.

53% of CFOs now own digital transformation in their organisation. 42% are responsible for capital allocation. 40% oversee risk management.

The CFO role hasn't just expanded. It has fundamentally changed in nature.

Wolters Kluwer's 2026 Future Ready CFO Report — a survey of 1,672 finance leaders — describes it clearly: the CFO has moved from scorekeeper to performance orchestrator.

And for UK finance leaders, the ambition is even higher than the global average:

· 63% of UK CFOs identify finance transformation as a strategic priority — vs 52% globally

· 90% want to co-lead digital transformation initiatives

· 93% place greater emphasis on continuous learning than their global peers

But here's the tension nobody talks about enough.

The orchestrator role only works if the finance function around you has evolved at the same pace.

27% of CFOs cite resistance to change as their biggest barrier. Only 46% report healthy tension in their leadership teams. Just 40% say they have sufficient debate.

Ambition without the right team is aspiration — not transformation.

This week's newsletter explores what the shift really demands, where most finance functions are falling short, and five questions every CFO should be asking right now.

Dealing with rejection after an accountancy or finance interview can be disheartening, but it's a common part of the job search process. To handle interview rejection effectively and improve your chances in the future, follow these steps:

Evaluate if the role was a good fit: Consider whether the position aligned with your career goals and allowed you to showcase your skills. If it didn't, adjust your job search to focus on roles you're genuinely passionate about.

Reassess your qualifications: Review the job requirements and compare them to your education and experience. If you lacked certain qualifications, consider acquiring them to enhance your future prospects.

Boost your interview confidence: Confidence plays a significant role in interview success. Practice with a friend or colleague, rehearse common interview questions and work on your body language and positive self-esteem.

Identify areas for improvement: Reflect on the interview and identify any weaknesses or areas where you struggled. Practice generating relevant answers and ensure you're well-prepared with company research.

Respond to the interviewer: Thank the company for their time and request feedback on why you weren't selected. This feedback will help you address any shortcomings for future interviews. Consider consulting with a recruitment agency specialising in accountancy and finance for additional guidance.

At BTG Recruitment, we offer support to accountancy and finance professionals in their career development. From CV and interview advice to finding suitable positions, we can assist you in finding your next role. Contact us at BTG Recruitment to schedule a career discussion and get started on your journey.

Recruitment Shouldn't End at Offer Acceptance

The candidate has accepted.

Great.

But that's not the end of recruitment.

The period between accepting an offer and starting is critical.

Candidates can still change their minds.

Good communication during this period helps maintain confidence and excitement about the move.

Keep candidates informed.
Keep them engaged.
Keep selling the opportunity.

An accepted offer isn't a guaranteed start.

Are You Rejecting Good Candidates Too Quickly?

A CV arrives.

One requirement isn't there.

Rejected.

Another candidate has a different industry background.

Rejected.

Another has 7 years' experience instead of 10.

Rejected.

At what point does “finding the right candidate” become “finding an identical candidate”?

Recruitment isn't about finding someone who looks exactly like the person you imagined.

It's about finding someone who can deliver what the business needs.
