Why we’re different (and why I think we’re better than most accountants)…

I know that’s a bold statement.

But I genuinely don’t believe your accountant’s job is just to file your accounts and send you a bill.

You deserve someone who explains things in plain English.

Someone who’s happy to answer your questions.

Someone who helps you understand your numbers instead of making you feel intimidated by them.

Someone who’s looking at where your business is going, not just where it’s been.

That’s exactly how we work at Harmony Accounting.

I’m Sam! I’m an Chartered Accountant and Financial Strategist (with a focus on Profit) for female service-providers running online businesses.

I’m based in Durham, England and only work with UK businesses.

I spent 18 years corporate finance world,before starting my accounting practice in 2022 (best decision ever!)

I am a mum to two girls & wife to Chris.

I have over 240 clients currently plus a full-time team member.

I’m big on personal development books and podcasts.⁠

I hate when female founders feel uncomfortable, shy or stupid asking their accountant a question (never in my world).

You’ll find me working out most mornings. ⁠

You won’t catch me using big words and financial jargon - because this doesn’t help anyone! ⁠

I also hate talking to HMRC (everyone does, you’re not alone)

I love clothes and shopping! ⁠My chanel bag is my baby.

Meet Alice 💗

You might see me popping up on social media, but behind the scenes there is a whole lot more going on to keep Harmony Accounting running smoothly.

And a huge part of that is Alice.

Alice joined Harmony Accounting full-time in 2025 and honestly, hiring her was one of the best decisions I have made in the business.

She keeps so many moving parts running behind the scenes.

From onboarding new clients and making sure they have a smooth start with us.

To payroll, VAT returns, year end accounts and helping clients with Xero.

(And if we’re being honest, she is probably better at Xero than I am 🤣)

If something isn’t working in Xero, Alice can normally find the answer before I’ve even finished explaining the problem.

What I love most is that she cares just as much as I do about making sure clients feel supported, looked after and never afraid to ask questions.

Because that’s what Harmony Accounting is all about.

Making finances feel simple.

Giving people confidence.

And helping business owners feel calm and in control of their numbers.

So if you’ve ever emailed us, joined us as a client, had help with Xero or wondered how everything runs so smoothly behind the scenes, there’s a very good chance Alice had something to do with it.

You’re jealous of their £10k months.

Their sold out launches.

Their growing team.

Their fully booked diary.

But you’re only seeing the highlight reel.

What you don’t see is the refund request that landed this morning.

The client who cancelled.

The sleepless nights over cashflow.

The tax bill they weren’t prepared for.

Or the fact they’re making good money but not actually keeping much of it.

I see this all the time.

Because numbers tell a very different story to Instagram.

A business can look incredibly successful from the outside and still be struggling behind the scenes.

That’s why I always say - revenue is only one piece of the puzzle.

Profit matters.

Cashflow matters.

Understanding where your money is going matters.

Because your business isn’t meant to look successful.

It’s meant to support your life.

And when you understand your numbers properly, you stop comparing yourself to everyone else online and start making decisions based on what’s right for you.

The truth is, most business owners aren’t bad with numbers.

They’ve just never had them explained in a way that makes sense.

This summer I’m investing in the things that actually make life feel rich:

✨ Drinks with friends
✨ Business books and podcasts that challenge my thinking
✨ Days out with the kids
✨ Staying strong and healthy
✨ Time in the sunshine
✨ Date nights and childcare 😂
✨ Making memories with my girls
✨ Working fewer hours and being more present

For years I thought success was about earning more.

Now I know it’s about creating a business that gives me the freedom to spend my time on the things that matter most.

Because what’s the point of building a profitable business if you never get to enjoy the life it’s meant to create?

Things you probably don’t know about me…..

“I joined the RAF
..then 2 car crashes later I met my husband.

I can’t bend my ring finger from those crashes.

I never cook, ever. That’s Chris’s job. I can do fajitas or a jacket potato but that’s it.

I don’t look after our own personal finances (I do enough looking at everyone elses)

I used to be notorious for booking tickets to events and then never go. They sounded like a good idea at the time but then... no thank you.

I used to be an online fitness coach before I started Harmony Accounting

I can’t eat eggs since having my two girls they make me sick!

I once got kicked off karoke in Spain with my bestie (yes we were terrible)

I really like Belted Galloway cows, look how cute.

I’m a shopaholic (but you may have known that!)

I’ve got tattoos but they’re all hidden (unless I’m in workout gear)

I don’t have a turnover goal, I have life goals. Being able to take my family on holiday, go to every school play and never work a full week.

I’ve got 244 accountancy clients (and growing!)

“I messed up and hired my first full-time employee too late.

I’m an accountant with over 240 clients and had a team of 5 associates helping me support them.

I happened to be using my employee cost template for a client and a lightbulb went off.

Funnily enough, I realised needed to check the numbers for my own team... andI could afford this too.

I went to my cashflow, plugged the numbers in and realised I definitely could.

Not only do I get more hours for the same cost but I also only have to communicate with one person.

I love having a full time employee too because they do more than just client delivery.

They help with making the business better, whether that’s a new template, new system or improving client experience.

Plus when you hire any employee you save employers national insurance which is over £1000.

If you’ve got multiple freelancers or associates supporting you right now, maybe it’s time to figure out if an employee would be a better investment.”
