None of these mean you’ve been doing anything wrong. Most landscapers price on what feels right because nobody showed them another way.

But a few small checks before each quote can be the difference between a busy year and a profitable one.

If your prices start from the hourly wage, the gap between paid hours and chargeable hours comes straight out of your profit.

In this example, a £15/hour operative really costs £23.44 for every hour you can charge, and that’s before a penny of overheads.

It’s about whether you know your numbers well enough to plan for it.

Do you know:

👉 Your monthly overheads?
👉 How much turnover you need just to break even?
👉 How much cash you need in reserve?
👉 Which months are likely to be tight?
👉 Whether you’re putting enough aside while business is busy?

When you know those numbers, winter stops being something you hope you’ll get through.

It becomes something you can plan for.

And that’s the difference between reacting to a cashflow problem when the bank balance starts dropping and spotting it months earlier.

What a fantastic couple of days at FutureScape! 🌿🎤

It’s been brilliant catching up with so many familiar faces, meeting lots of new people and having some great conversations across the landscaping industry.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to speak about pricing and profitability, as well as being part of the panel discussion on AI and the future of our industry.

And of course, we can’t forget Lucy winning the darts competition! 🎯🏆🤣

£40,000 in the bank doesn't necessarily mean you have £40,000 to spend.

Some of it might already belong to HMRC.

Some might be needed for wages.

Suppliers may still need paying.

And the next few weeks could look very different from today.

Yet it's incredibly common for business owners to use the bank balance as a quick measure of how well the business is doing.

Your bank balance is useful.

But it doesn't tell you the whole story.

Your profit and loss, balance sheet and cashflow reports do – if you know what you're looking at.

Money owed to you in October is far more useful than money that finally arrives in March.

If your landscaping business naturally gets quieter over winter, there are things you can start doing before the slowdown hits.

✔️ Look at your cashflow for the next 4–6 months
✔️ Work out your monthly overheads
✔️ Put money aside from payments coming in now
✔️ Chase outstanding invoices before Christmas
✔️ Consider maintenance contracts or winter work
✔️ Look at deposits for spring jobs already being quoted

None of these are particularly complicated.

But they’re much easier to do before cash gets tight.

The businesses that get through winter comfortably aren’t necessarily the ones that made the most money during summer.

They’re often the ones that planned ahead.
