CIS returns are due today, the 19th. If yours is filed, good. If not, today still counts, tomorrow costs £100.

And a thought as this month of daily tips wraps up. Almost every tax problem we see comes down to the same thing, leaving it late. The fix is rarely clever. It is early.

If anything from this month applies to you, sole trader, landlord, subbie or director, call 07838 450050 or message the page for a fixed quote. 1 conversation now saves a January panic.

Contractors under CIS, your monthly return is due tomorrow, the 19th.

Every subcontractor paid in the month to 5 August needs including, with the right deductions. File late and the penalty is automatic, £100 even if 1 day late.

Monthly deadlines are relentless, which is exactly why this is a job to hand over. It runs quietly in the background and the penalties simply stop.

When did you last read your tax code? Not glance at it. Read it.

That small line on your payslip decides how much tax comes off every single month. Codes go wrong more often than people think, after job changes, benefits, side income or an HMRC estimate that never got updated.

A wrong code quietly takes the wrong amount all year. 5 minutes checking it is one of the best returns on time in tax.

A myth that costs people real money. HMRC will tell me if I owe something.

HMRC is not your accountant. Nobody there checks whether you claimed every allowance, chose the best structure or paid too much. The system takes what the return says.

The duty to get it right, and the chance to pay less within the rules, both sit with you.

That is the entire reason our profession exists.

What does an accountant actually need from you? Less than people fear.

Bank statements. Invoices and receipts, photos are fine. Last year's return if you had one. And an honest picture of anything unusual.

That is the starting kit. You do not need to tidy it first, sorting the shoebox is part of the job and we have seen far worse than yours.

The only mistake is bringing it in January instead of now.

Thinking of taking on your first employee? 3 things before the first payday.

Register as an employer with HMRC. It takes time to come through, so do it early.

Get a payroll system running. Payslips and RTI submissions are compulsory from day 1.

And budget for more than the salary. Employer National Insurance and pension contributions sit on top.

None of it is hard with a bit of notice. All of it is stressful the week wages are due.

Directors, dividends need paperwork, not just a bank transfer.

Each dividend should have a board minute and a dividend voucher, and the company needs profits available to pay it. No profits means it is not legally a dividend at all, whatever the transfer says.

HMRC does look at this, especially when other things are being questioned. 5 minutes of paperwork per payment protects you.

Subcontractors, an honest question. Have you ever actually checked what CIS owes you back?

20% comes off your pay before you see it. But your tools, travel, materials and other costs reduce what you truly owe. For many subbies the difference comes back as a refund, year after year.

The ones who never check are usually the ones owed the most.

Send the page a message and we will tell you if there is something worth claiming.

The single best bookkeeping decision a sole trader can make costs nothing.

A separate bank account for the business. Not even a business account necessarily, just separate.

Every mixed account we untangle contains months of guesswork. Was that £40 fuel or a family trip? Nobody remembers in January.

Separate the money and the bookkeeping half does itself.

Limited company owners, your confirmation statement is not your accounts.

The confirmation statement tells Companies House who owns and runs the company. The accounts report the numbers. Different filings, different deadlines, both compulsory.

Miss the confirmation statement for long enough and Companies House can start striking the company off. That is a much bigger problem than the 5 minute filing it replaces.

Check your dates today. They are public on the Companies House website.
