Capital gains tax — it's not just for property investors.
If you've sold any assets this tax year — shares, a second property, business assets — you may have a capital gains tax (CGT) liability to report on your Self Assessment.
For 2026/27 the rates are 18% for basic rate taxpayers and 24% for higher rate taxpayers on most assets. If you've sold all or part of a business and qualify for Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR), it's 18%.
The annual CGT exemption has been reduced significantly in recent years, so even relatively modest gains can now trigger a tax bill.
Have you made any disposals this year? It's worth flagging to your accountant now rather than discovering a surprise in January.
