One of the greatest strengths of any business is knowing it can continue to care for people through every stage of its journey.

This month, I wanted to take a moment to thank Mandy as she begins her retirement after many years of dedication to our clients and our team.

While we'll all miss her enormously, I'm incredibly proud of what we've built at Magenta. A team of people who genuinely care, share the same values, and are committed to supporting our clients for the long term.

Financial planning is about relationships. It's about having people around you who understand what's important to you and will be there as life changes.

Thank you, Mandy, for everything you've done. And thank you to every one of our clients for the trust you place in us. It means more than you know.

Last week, we talked about the hidden costs of university life for parents. This week, we’re focusing on something equally important…helping students make their money go further.
University doesn’t have to be defined by a spiralling overdraft. With the right habits and a little preparation, students can build financial skills that set them up for life.

With 76% of UK students admitting they worry about making ends meet, learning how to optimise a budget is no longer optional - it’s essential.

From cashback apps to part-time work, here are some of the key things worth knowing before they pack their bags:

The Power of the Side Hustle: Roughly 65% of modern students now hold down a side hustle or part-time job, earning an average of £547 a month to help bridge the funding gap.

Tech-First Budgeting: Student discount platforms and reward apps can save hundreds a year on everything from food to technology.

Hidden Tax Wins: Keeping an eye on payslips and tax codes could prevent overpaying tax. Many students get placed on emergency tax codes and don’t realize they’re owed a refund.

Cutting Course Costs: Buying second-hand textbooks or utilizing digital library copies can dramatically cut down mandatory course expenses.

Smart Renting: Rent is the single biggest expense (averaging £529 a month). Checking accommodation standards carefully and understanding tenant rights before signing a contract is vital.

The transition to university can feel overwhelming for both students and parents, but building strong financial habits early takes the pressure off.
Could your child be better prepared financially for university life?

University is exciting for students… but for parents, it can feel financially overwhelming.
From student loans and budgeting to hidden costs and travel expenses, there’s far more to think about than tuition fees alone.

Did you know the amount your child receives in maintenance loans is linked to household income? Under modern student finance rules, the government assumes parents will bridge the gap.

The reality? Recent data shows the average UK student spends around £1,142 a month on living costs, but the average maintenance loan only provides about £640 a month.
That leaves parents and students facing an unexpected shortfall of over £500 every single month.

Before university starts, it’s worth helping your child understand:
Budgeting for rent, food, utilities and social life
Hidden costs like TV licences, contents insurance and broadband
Student discounts, railcards and hardship funds available
How modern banking apps can help track and manage daily spending

If providing a direct monthly allowance feels difficult, there are other tactical ways to support them, from covering a phone contract to contributing directly towards travel or groceries.
The money-management habits students build now can stay with them for life, so having open conversations early can make a huge difference.

Are you prepared for the real cost of supporting a child through university?

Understanding your State Pension now could make a huge difference to your future retirement income.
Did you know you need at least 10 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions to receive any State Pension at all, and 35 years for the full amount?

For the 2026/27 tax year, the full New State Pension is £241.30 per week, but not everyone receives the full amount, even with 35+ years on their record. Historic “contracting out” arrangements can sometimes reduce entitlement, which is why checking your forecast is so important.

It’s also worth knowing that gaps in your National Insurance record can often be filled through voluntary contributions. In some cases, topping up just one missing year could increase your pension income for life.

Your State Pension may not fund retirement on its own, but it forms an important foundation for your long-term financial planning.

If you’re approaching retirement, it’s well worth checking:
Your State Pension forecast
Your National Insurance record
Whether topping up missing years could benefit you

Do you know what your State Pension is really worth?

This month’s vlog comes from the Seychelles.

I’ve been reflecting a lot on what travel is actually good for beyond just having a nice holiday, and how stepping away from normal life can give you a bit of perspective.

A slower pace, giant tortoises, ancient forests, good food and a reminder that not everything worthwhile happens quickly.
