Big Changes Coming to Inheritance Tax (If You Own a
Business or Farm) 🚨

New rules came in on 6 April that affect how much agricultural
and business property you can pass on tax-free. If this applies
to you, it's worth understanding the changes.

The short version: from April, 100% relief on business or farm
assets is now capped at £2.5 million per person (or £5 million
for couples). Assets above that get 50% relief instead of the
full amount.

The good news? Most smaller family businesses and farms are
unaffected. But if you've got a significant business or property
holding, it's time to talk succession planning with someone
who knows the detail.

Capital Allowances Update — It Might Save You Money 💡

If you've been thinking about upgrading equipment,
machinery, or vehicles for your business, there's something
worth knowing.

From April 2026, the Writing Down Allowance (WDA) rate on
plant and machinery dropped from 18% to 14%. Less generous
relief on depreciation from now on, but if you've already
made purchases, you might be able to claim under the old
rates.

If you're planning purchases for the rest of the year, let's chat
through the numbers. Sometimes the timing makes all the
difference to your tax position.

Employer Costs — What's Changed?

If you run a business with employees, April has brought a few
changes to your cost base:

💼 National Living Wage is now £12.71/hr (up from £12.21)

💼 For 18–20 year olds, it's risen to £10.85/hr

💼 Employer NI stays at 15%, but that secondary threshold is
still £5,000

💼 Employment Allowance remains at £10,500, make sure you're claiming it if you're eligible

Ronnie's Reminder 🐕

Ronnie's had a look at the calendar and wants to flag
something important. If you're a company director paying
yourself through dividends, the dividend tax rate went up this
tax year. The basic rate is now 10.75%, and the tax-free
allowance is still just £500. It might be time to revisit how
you're taking money out of your business.

🎉 Happy New Tax Year!

The new 2026/27 tax year is here. A few things have changed
from today that are worth knowing about:

The National Living Wage rises to £12.71/hr - if you employ
staff, check your payroll is updated.

Dividend tax rates have increased by 2% - if you take income
through dividends, now's a good time to review your
extraction strategy.

Statutory Sick Pay is now a day-one right, and paternity leave
follows suit. Lots moving at once.
